It's Fall (well Indian summer) and the leaves are finally starting to turn. Combine that with month-long Oktoberfest festivities and you have a formula for great leaf peeping and brews to boot.
Bear Mountain is one of the best places within an hour of NYC to hike and the annual Oktoberfest at Bear Mountain In is sure to include drinking large quantities of great German, Czech & Austrian beers on tap, authentic German food to warm your bellies as well as a Bavarian music groups to get your toes tapping (*Liederhosen optional*).
The plan is to get free parking by Fort Montgomery and hike to Popolopen Torne, including the loop around Brooks Lake. Check out a description of the trail by a local hiker. We'll then head back to the parking lot and take the blue trail south to join the festivities. Truthfully this is meant to be a relatively easy hike before we get our drink on. However if folks are so inclined we could add a hike to Perkins Tower with views of Bear Mountain (@ 3 miles RT).
Whichever option we choose, I'd like to be at a bench at the festival with a Stein in my hand no later than 2pm. Steins (massive beer mugs with an ~2L capacity) are $23 and only $9 to refill. Cups are $5 each. If you have them, be sure to bring playing cards and table/board games. For some info. on the festival, check out the flyer link.
Hike/Backpacking Disclaimer: As with most hikes on this meetup, this is a new trail for the organizer and perhaps yourself. We'll be following the trail map, research on the trail (noted above) and our own sense of direction. Marked trails are easy enough to follow but at times we might deviate down an incorrect path. You'll be expected to be prepared and involved in any decisions made on trail routes, etc. Lastly, we're here to enjoy the weekend, the sights and get some exercise in before/after the festivities.
Difficulty: Intermediate however we will be going at a leisurely pace (no more than 1.5-2 mph). I'd say given the options, this is good for all levels since you can choose to opt out at any time if you're not up for it.
Weather: This is an all weather event. We will monitor the forecast for severe weather and may cancel depending on the severity of the predicted weather.
