"Saga Volume 1", by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples

Saga is an epic, universe-spanning story of a star-crossed couple protecting their infant daughter. The story opens with the narrator’s birth, in the middle of a machine shop on a war-torn planet. Her parents, Alana, a winged soldier from the planet Landfall, and Marko, a horned former prisoner of war from Landfall’s moon, have been on the run from both of their military forces, which are on opposite sides of the never-ending galactic war. Betrayed, the family is almost destroyed just as it forms. Only sheer luck gives Marko, Alana, and their daughter a chance to brave the wilds and make their way in the worlds.

Hope to see you all at Professor Thom's on the 24th!

Strangers In Paradise is great, but it can get a little unwieldy at times. I prefer Moore's Echo which is tighter, but much different.

Anybody read any graphic novel series that had similar "vibe" to Saga? Of other Brian K. Vaughan stories only Y The Last Man feels a little bit similar to me. I am reading Terry Moore's The Strangers in Paradise and that feels the closest though I only read 5 issues and 100+ to go ...

    Quite unique ongoing graphic novel.

I had a lot of fun, it was my 1st meet up ever and 1st time at uncle thom's but definitely not the last for either; so hopefully I'll be seeing everyone soon.

It was great seeing everyone - from the people who hadn't been to an event in a while to the first time attendees - thanks to all of you who showed up!

I rated this Meetup event 4 Stars. It required me to step outside my comfort zone, but I think the members really enjoyed themselves. I think a greater introduction was needed to overcome the large number of attendees and the large/odd "bar space". The success of this event was mainly due to attendees who really seem to have passion for comics and a high comfort level for speaking in a bar space. The guy with the Superboy T-Shirt was a good example; he really seemed to get the ball rolling. I believe the success of this event was the opportunity of bringing like-minded individuals to share their passions and opinions about comics, movies, and just "Geek Culture" in general. This (in my opinion) wasn't so much a "book discussion" as it was a "bar meet". I also think that the number of attendees (about 30) and the bar space made discussing difficult, however, I think it was a success. I thought that all of the attendees were really nice. I also thought the book selection was a good one.

Look forward to the next one! It should be posted soonish.

Sorry you couldn't get in, Lindsay, I should have looked into that beforehand - the Overlook, which is also a bar, will let people under 21 in if they're with a group and not going to be drinking. Hope to see you next time...

      February 24, 2013

  • Ryan

Tried to show up, but the guy at the door wouldn't let me in because I didn't have my ID with me. Hopefully I'll be able to make the next one.

    February 24, 2013

    • Angela

Sorry about that! We didn't know they would be carding, especially since we'd reserved the whole 2nd floor.

I have never been to Professor Thoms -- is the Loft Bar up a flight of stairs? Reason I ask is that I have RA and I am currently using a cane and a knee brace to walk.

    February 23, 2013

    • Michael

Yes, there's a flight of stairs that you take to get up to the second floor. I'll check with the management to see if there's an elevator option.

      February 24, 2013

    • Michael

I heard back from them this morning - no elevator, unfortunately.

How long is the meet for?

    February 24, 2013

    • Michael

There's no set end time, but on the average, people usually start heading out around 6.

      February 24, 2013

  • Phil

Dropped to a maybe due to a work project, but there are people on the wait list so I'll gracefully bow out.

One possible topic for dicussion: I wonder if anybody thoought about how important is scifi/fantasy setting for Saga? I find it fun to imagine the story in completely different space or time.

Some interesting tidbits I found in interwebs.

    1) Common questions answered: Why Saga name? Will their war end? How many issues are planned? BKV interviewed:
    http://www.aintitcool.com/node/58952

    2) The covers I liked: http://www.comixology.com/DV8-Gods-and-Monsters/comics-series/4105

    3) Earlier and different Fiona Staples art for "Done To Death": http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2011/09/preview-foley-staples-take-a-bite-out-of-vampire-fiction-with-done-to-death/

    4) "Nouveau Hobo" a comic illustrated by Fiona Staples as music video:

Finally I think about buying Mystery Society illustrated by Fiona. Anybody else read it?

ah, how did I end up on a waiting list. SAGA has no lack of fans that's for sure perhaps the answer isn't a bigger venue but more than one event.

Wait are we meeting at Roasttown or Professor Thoms? I am confused.

I also admire the artwork. The single issue #8 has few pages dedicated to Fiona's process with illustrations. Shorter version is in her tumbler: http://fionastaples.tumblr.com/post/33795629726/

I love Amazon! I placed my order for the next three books on the reading list at 2am this morning. I just received an email saying that the books have already been shipped. To save a few dollars, I chose to have my books sent with free shipping. Their slow/free shipping usually arrives the same as their regular standard speed.

Thanks for the reading list, it appears to be an interesting selection. I purchased Saga and the listed "runner ups" as well from Amazon. I didn't buy Gotham by Gaslight because it was listed as "preorder" only. I like the idea of having a reading list for the next few months, it makes buying the books easier and cheaper. :-)
