D&D 4e

  • Needs a date

  • Tutu's

25 Bogart St, Brooklyn, NY (map)

    40.704090 -73.933250

  • I am starting a D&D 4e game in the classic style (also know as free food and drink). I will be running it out of my Apartment once a week and it will be my own campaign setting that I have been working on for over a year. Players of all skill will be welcome and this will be a Chris Perkins style of game so watch out for acid.

Location will be given out when I have some players.

I am also willing to make it a Pathfinder game if the demand is high.

I am very interested in this. I have mostly only played 4e and need a group desperately. All work and no play makes Joshua a dull boy hehehe. Let me know if there is still space for more players. I am a beginner, but very eager to play.

Hey, everyone. I just posted a game on RPG connect. 3 Monday sessions. Sign up if interested!!

I think this thread might have been abandoned. Any DMs out there looking to start something up? I'd do it but I'm DMing alot and never get to play. There is a group looking for members on rpgconnect, look at one shots. The bottom listing is a group that is just starting up. As for Brooklyn, any Dms floating around in need of players drop me a line, I can play on Sundays.

If there's a game forming in Brooklyn at Tutu's place, and there's room for 2 more players, we'd be interested. Please let us know what the details are. Thank You.

At the moment I am working on a campaign but work is getting in the way. I have 3 games running and I am not yet able to juggle another 4e game till I have one prepared. If another DM wants to pick up the slack and grab a few extra players that would be appreciated. I am just swamped with DMing games and work.

    March 10, 2013

  • Carlos M.

So many willing players. How come noone decides to just take these extra players (like myself), introduce them to one another so they can make another group? XD

If anyone is willing I have a Studio where we can play.

It looks like you are full up on players right? How many DMs do you have? I would be interested in both DMing(but DMing only 3.5 or Pathfinder) and playing, open to playing more systems.

So I have my players for the Sunday game. I am working on other games as well (4E, GURPS, Call of Cuthulhu, Vampire: The Masquerade...etc) so I am making a new post here for all those games so this conversation is going to be for the upcoming 4E game.

The 4E game is going to start on the 2/28/13. Please E-mail [masked] with "4E Game" in the subject line.

First come first serve. This will be a twice a month game.

  • DMgabe

I also will be doing a 4e game on thursdays that I do not set up for 5e so look for that soon as well. (sooner than the 5e game)

    February 7, 2013

  • DMgabe

Ok, after talking with a few people I am going to open up two monthly games. The one coming up first is the second and fourth Sunday of every month. It will be a 3.5/Pathfinder game. This game will start on the 23rd of February at my apartment. The second game will be on a Thursday (to be determined) which will be a DnD NEXT (5e) playtest game. This means I will need time to prepare and confirm players who are willing to playtest 5e. I will post another meetup for that one later on.

I am writing a campaign as we speak for the 23rd. If you want to reserve a spot for this game please email me at [masked] and put "3.5 Game" in the title. When I have 6 players I will close this game but I will be opening other games as I establish them that people who RSVP and don't get a spot will get first dibs to.

    2 · February 7, 2013

  • Yongilman

Well, as we don't have any campaign details its hard to have a character :P. We will probably gen them prior to the first meeting.

As for game type, I'll play whichever the DM wants to run. If we do 4.0 I'll probably do a controller (wizard). If we do 3.5 I'll probably do either an illusionist, druid, or fighter. Depending on what the party needs.

I would like to say that after I reviewed Pathfinder's rules they are really close to 3.5 hence I think that if the majority of the attendees will ask for Pathfinder I will follow. Only one little problem I do not have a character yet...

    February 4, 2013

  • Ross W.

I thought it might be helpful to tally up availability between Thursday and Friday. Here's where we're at:

    -Thursday-
    Saj
    Valerio
    Jaytee Star
    Matt H
    Brian the Lucky
    Yongilman

    -Sunday-
    Ross Wade
    Willow K
    Nick
    John P

    -Swings-
    Bob Steadman
    DMgabe

As Nick pointed out, there appear to be enough players for both days. Also, some players haven't RSVP'd (Brian the Lucky and Willow K) and others have RSVP'd but not specified a day (Julia Lofredo, Ken, and Nathan Persinger).

Between D&D 4e and Pathfinder, I'm a little more interested in Pathfinder because I recently received the core rulebooks as a gift, but I would be excited to play either one.

    1 · February 3, 2013

  • Nick

Gabe, at have a suggestion which,if you like it, may help. You said youre looking to play weekly. Well, if you're amenable, it may be worth considering doing one game biweekly on Thursdays, and another one biweekly on Sundays, since there clearly isn't a day that would work for everyone and you have way too many people already. I prefer biweekly anyway as its a bit easier to fit into a busy schedule.

You could run the same basic game for each group. Then if down the line a lot of people drop out of either game, you'd be easily able to combine them. The problem with this idea is that it's more work for you. So I certainly wouldn't blame you if you vetoed it. If you do like this idea, you'd also have the option of running one pathfinder and one 4E. Which would make that debate mostly moot. Though again, more work for you.

Anyway, I can probably only play if its on Sundays. I work too late on Thursdays.

    2 · February 3, 2013

  • Nick

I'd be interested in playing, especially if we're pathfinder. If its Thursdays I wouldn't be able to get there before 7:30ish most of the time.

Another point of note here is that 11 people have RSVP'd... That's enough for a 4e group AND a Pathfinder group. The vote doesn't really matter to everyone if only 6 of the people replied will be playing.

    1 · February 1, 2013

Sweet. I am looking forward to getting a game going.

      1 · February 1, 2013

Good point Jaytee! Now just have to figure out who would be interested in dm'ing a pathfinder group/campaign. (I'd be interested in being a player, not dm. Been a bit long since I've played, and I also don't have enough of the books.)

I really do hope we play 4e. there are already a bunch of PF stuff on meetup. Its hard to find a new 4e group.

It really is not hard to crush a party in 4e. Healing surges come with a very big limitation. They are limited in number. The vast majority of healing in 4e uses up healing surges. Once the party of superheros runs out of healing surges, TPK results. Healing Surges definitely increase the power of a party for a given fight, but it puts a hard limit on how many fights they can get into.

This is very different in my PF games. There is no limit to the amount of times you can be healed. And after every heal, you are as good as new (excluding drains). Not even a scar. In my PF game, we carry a big bag filled with wands of cure light wounds (best hp to gp ratio). After every fight, trap, or any hit point drain, we simply use a bunch of charges and then we are completely fine. We could fight a hundred battles a day. Personally I feel this breaks fantasy for me.

    January 31, 2013

    • Yongilman

To me healing surges are a mechanism to do more playing and less sleeping. I like pathfinder better because it seems better for role playing, but I like 4e as well, as I think it is a lot better in terms of balance.

      1 · February 1, 2013

  • Brian the l.

I have played 4E and 3.5 but have never played Pathfinder. I wouldn't mind playing in a Pathfinder group, but I don't know the system, rules, pc creation, etc. That's really the only reason I would prefer 4E. I kind of enjoy the super hero playstyle, Willow. It's fairly easy for a DM to humble players in 4E, if he or she really wants to.

    January 31, 2013

    • saj

I have been playing d&d since 2nd Ed (2nd, 3.0, 3.5, PF, 4.0, Dnd Next). The role playing vs powergaming issue has nothing to do with the game version. I have seen plenty of power gamers in 3.0/3.5/PF and I have seen plenty of role players in 4e. It all depends on who you play with.

Willow, i would expect your power gamer experience with 4e had much more to do with your party than 4e.

Healing surges make players are more resilent in a given fight. But almost all healing uses up healing surges and char only have a limited number of them. So it may be easy to heal a char, but they can only do it a limited number of times a day. They can get quickly screwed if they have multiple encounters per day.

      January 31, 2013

    • saj

      (cont'd from above)

In contrast, my PF party may be less resilent in a given fight, but they can fight an infinite number of fights per day. PF has no limits to how many times you can get healed. As long as there are charges in the big bag of wands of CLW, everybody would not have have a scratch on him two minutes after the fight was over.

This means that even if the trap goes off in front of the rogue, it doesn't matter. It is not likely to kill him, and we would just heal him back up. Other than charges on a wand there is no cost to the party. Personally I think this takes away from the experience.

To me both editions are superhero style gameplay. In 4e you have more healing in a battle, but 4e limits to how many battles you can fight and live. In PF, you have less healing in a battle, but you can fight for hundreds of fights per day without even a scratch (assuming you bought the bag of wands of cure light wounds)

Only if it is 4e, not if it is PF

Really hoping that you guys will throw your two cents in about the game being 4e vs pathfinder. I would be more interested in a pathfinder rules set game vs 4e. *We should take a pole.*

One of my main reasons I prefer pathfinder over 4e is that I'm not a big fan of healing surges and second wind in 4e. It allows people to play their characters a bit too superhero like. In my opinion and from what I've seen, the higher risk factors in pathfinder without healing surges makes people think of their characters more realistically instead of near-invincible ones as achieved through healing surges and second winding.
(I can list some other reasons too but that's one of my biggest.)

Maybe you guys in addition to a vote for pathfinder or 4e can also state a reason or two for why you like (or don't like) one rules set versus the other.

Thanks for your consideration, time and input! =^_^=

Hi, I might be interested in being a part of this campaign. Not yet sure which day works better for me (maybe Sunday). I've been a d&d 3.5 edition role player for a few years now (or should say a few years ago since I haven't gamed since moving here from Chicago.) Though I have a few of the d&d 4e books, I would be more inclined to playing Pathfinder.
