Monthly Alliance Meeting

WEATHER UPDATE:

AS OF NOW THE MEETING IS ON AND WE PLAN TO HAVE A PACKED AGENDA. HOWEVER, IF ETHICAL DECIDES TO CLOSE THE BUILDING MONDAY, THEN WE WILL NOT MEET. PLEASE CHECK BACK HERE MONDAY BETWEEN 3-4PM FOR UPDATES. Thanks and stay warm everyone!

(ps--if the meeting is on you can also pick up a radon test kit, the program is extended because of continued cold weather)

HOW OUR MEETINGS WORK:

The NYC Grassroots Alliance is a coalition of various enviro groups around the city. We use this meetup group and a google listserv ([masked]) to keep each other informed of events and actions of mutual interest, and support each other's events with attendance and promotion to our own private lists.

In order to gain permission to post events you must attend at least one meeting in person and represent a group that hosts events of interest. Non-relevant or commercial events will be deleted at the discretion of the group organizers.

We meet once a month to discuss current events and decide on larger coalition efforts.

PLEASE NOTE: We prefer not like to take time out of the meetings for event announcements. If you have an event coming up that you want help with or want to announce, please CREATE AN EVENT HERE AT THE MEETUP SITE, or bring flyers to pass out at the meeting.

Agenda Items (carried from last meeting):

• Should this group contact Gina McCarthy (EPA) discuss how/with what agenda? (suggested by susan)

• The Fukushima anniversary (suggested by Ken)

• The "Pete Seeger Causeway" (petition to rename the tappan zee bridge)  suggested by Kevin

• How to capitalize on De Blasio's big fracking statement/translate that into shifting his position on infrastructure? (suggested by clare)

• Earth  Day events / opportunities for a united messaging? Which groups will be at Union Square? How can we have impact? (suggested by clare)

Please suggest additional agenda items in the comment section (below) at least one day before the meeting.

Having a path to published protocols that establish protocols for interaction (see other post), the next agenda Karen brought was, as I understand,…

Exercises, Workshops or Methods to Make Us More Effective Communicators and Collaborators.

The recent upstate/downstate country/city emails show how perceptual and communication disconnects among energetic, dedicated people can go awry. What can we do to ensure we all:

    * Have a clear idea of our own desires and priorities.

    * Understand how we are communicating with each other and allies — what works and doesn't work for us.

    * Understand how what we are communicating is perceived by others — what are we assuming about the recipients, how does the world look from their perspective, how do we look from their perspective.

    * Effectively negotiations, for example of priorities.

Let us discuss available ways to address this.

Karen Hirsch and I had an interesting discussion about two agenda items she has in mind. Karen would be unable to post the until late tonight, so I will post them with the caveat that his is my understanding of Karen's intentions — she may modify the ideas.

The first of her agenda items is…

Protocols for Setting Agenda, Conducting Meetings, and List Serve Terms of Use People may not be equally aware of these protocols because they are not published in one place or readily available.

Consolidating all this at a meeting is not practical. But could we define the scope of the protocols, identify where they currently reside (emails, people's heads, this MeetUp event), and assign the task of gathering them into a concise document.

Re Susan Spieler's comment: before the meeting I'll circulate a letter to Kerry re KXL for sign-on by our member organizations. I'd also like to form a working group to plan actions/events for the period leading up to the State Dept's draft National Interest Determination on KXL (due no earlier than May).

Finally, I think we should spend at least a little time discussing Asha Canalos's open letter ("Macro v. Micro," sent Thu 2/27 at 5PM).

Another idea we discussed 2 meetings ago was getting a group of items we'd like to ask Di Blasio to post on his website of things that we would like NYC residents to consider doing to help reduce climate change. I suspect that, with the other more time sensitive items on the agenda, I imagine that its best to postpone this item for another month unless a meeting with Di Blasio is in the works sooner.

I had proposed that we send a letter from the GA to Kerry before the close of the Comment period and had nominated Pat to draft it before the March 3 meeting since that's 4 days before 3/7 so we'd have to get it done quickly.

another agenda item: should NYCGA create a facebook page? If so, who volunteers to create/administer? What types of posting guidelines would be suggested? (if no time bump this to next alliance meeting)

please post agenda suggestions as comments on this page at least one day prior to meeting.
