THIS IS A BEGINNERS FRIENDLY VERSION OF MY OTHER HIKE!!
We will be end up splitting in to two groups one beginners and another one advance so everyone can explore as much as they want.
No kids, no pets, no exceptions.
We will hike at a steady pace with frequent stops at view points over rocky trails and some light rock scrambling. There is 1 steep incline of 200 feet. The hike is long, but the views are fantastic.
Maps: NYNJTC Map #104
Terrain: Rocky and uneven in places. Fairly steep in spots.
Conservation center – loop road - High point carriage way - High point carriage way – High point trail – Verkeerder Falls – back to parking lot
This hike climbs to Sam's Point, with spectacular views, follows a narrow path through the crevices of the Ice Caves, and continues to Verkeerderkill Falls - the highest waterfall in the Shawangunks.
This hike will take you through Sam's Point preserve, owned by the Nature Conservancy. The preserve is part of the Shawangunk ridge extending into Minnewaska State Park. We will hike through a rare and endangered ecosystem, consisting of a dwarf pitch pine barren, one of the few remaining in the world. We will also hike to the ice caves which were formed from the boulders from the cliffs, creating huge rock crevices or caves. The air in the caves gets trapped keeping the interior cold enough for snow to stay through July!
