Winter Backpacking In Harriman State Park (3.3 Miles Easy - Moderate)

Back to Harriman for some early Spring Backpacking... This is a very easy 3.3 mile hike from Lake Skannatati parking lot to Big Hill leento via LONG PATH trail...From our camp at Big Hill Leento you will have some awesome views of Lake Welch and Jackie Jones Mt. to the north and Third and Second Reservoirs to the south.

Winter Backpacking gear list..

20/to -0deg sleeping bag
Late Winter clothes..(weather pending)
Food for 1 night/water...2-4 liters..
Stove...cookware (pots/pans..etc)
Camera....There will be some nice views of Harriman St Park
Hot coco....(I will bring a stove/fuel/small pot)...

It was a great easy hike....from daylight to night,......from cold to hot....Lots of snow....morning was the best,....after the loud mouth cavers left...it was all sound sleeping from that point on...

after going to two EMS stores and the REI, I was unable to find a sleeping bag. I have one on order but it won't come till next week. This is so sad for me, but I have to duck out this time. Next time for sure.

  Heated tent? I have a 20 bag and a reactor, but I sleep quite cold, so was afraid to sleep in the leanto with just that (since that is how I sleep in summer). If you think that would be fine with heated tent then I will totally come. I just dont want to die...

  a box of pasta with oil. One lad explained in an article how he boosts the temp inside his bag by gorging on pasta like an Olive Garden orgy. Something about the digestive ineffificiency with the fats will produce good body heat output? I may give it a go.

  I was considering cowboy camping which I enjoy with no need to bother with a tent. The wind situation has to be good and I have to be really tired. If I'm not really tired then I develope these insomnia producing thoughts like perhaps a coyote will see fit to take a leak in my bags head opening. considering that I sleep with my mouth partly open, this would not be cool. But hey, no bears to potentially much open your chest cavity sooo... why not.

I hope this does not come across as inappropriate, but this is not a rock concert. It is not barnum & bailey circus with 50 happy/sad clowns packed into a go-cart with Chihuahuas in pink tutus bangin up and down on pogo sticks yarping and howling as the crowd goes wild. The weather looks good this weekend and when they say 3.3miles this means your going to be humping your ass up that hill for awhile.

If you are looking for some adventure and variety in your life, want to challenge yourself, conquer your fears or just try things you've never done before... then you've come to the right place! This group is for people in New Yory City that like to stay fit, be active and have fun at the same time. Events range from hiking, camping, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, ziplining, obstacle course mud runs, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, skydiving, hang gliding, mountain biking, trail running and every other outdoor activity I can think of. I also didn't forget I'm born and raised in NYC, so we'll also have urban and social activities planned for the group too. This includes running, parkour, urban exploring, dodgeball, flag football and a wide variety of other activities.

Going on trips with like-minded friends is always more fun, and you'll find them here. You'll find we are a friendly, outgoing and quirky bunch who like to challenge ourselves and have a good time while doing it. Group sizes tend to be smaller here compared to other meetups, but you get to know people better as a result. Its easier to talk to people in a smaller group, the comraderie, conversation and the jokes are just better! lol

We do our best to keep our calendar busy with random and fun trips. Click Here to check out our Events Calendar. These would include all day outings, weekend road trips, vacations and other cross posted events with other meetup groups. There is no required membership cost and the annual $10 fee is completely voluntary. Any contribution is used to help plan and organize trips, maintain and spruce up the website.
