Emergency Responders practice a profession where workers are sent into an unfamiliar work environment every day. Many emergency responders have been seriously injured or have given their lives as a consequence of inadequate pre-incident information. Hundreds of millions of dollars of damage have resulted to property because responders had insufficient information about the supporting fire fighting infrastructure on-scene.
Design teams generate much of the information necessary to prevent these casualties and damages, but it is often not communicated well to those who will need it in a future emergency. All major North American Fire Codes require pre-incident planning be conducted while buildings are under construction. To be most effective, with the highest level of safety, and to provide the highest level of protection to business assets and continuity, responders must have pre-incident information about the buildings they are expected to respond to. Can the BIM help make this possible?
We will present and discuss The Open Floor Plan Display Project as a method of fire service pre-planning and building documentation. Future uses include incident command, energy performance metrics, and large scale planning.
