Detail Series - Metallic

Detail Series II - Metallic

MEATPACKING DISTRICT AND HIGH LINE

Shiny and reflective, or rusty and rough. Silver and bright, or dark and dull. Metal can have a high variety of looks and properties. This meetup is the second episode of the Detail Series and will focus on all sorts of metals and their appearance.

We will shoot at two very diverse locations in Manhattan. For the first hour or so, we will capture images in the (historical) Meatpacking District. I recommend to take a stroll into Chelsea Market as well. After that we will enter the High Line and walk along the railways. We can try to find something to eat together after the long walk.

Meetup Point: Jackson Square - small little park in a triangle between 8th Ave, Greenwich Street and Horatio Street.

Meetup Time: 11 am

This is a link to a printable map of the High Line:

http://files.meetup.com/1605023/high-line-map.pdf

And a map of the Meatpacking District and Meetup Point:
http://files.meetup.com/1605023/Meatpacking%20District%20Map.jpg

PLEASE PRINT YOURSELF A MAP IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THAT AREA.

Please be aware that both areas are popular by tourist. By starting earlier in the morning, I'm hoping to avoid the huge crowd that usually comes early afternoon. You probably won't need tripods and keep your gear light WE WILL WALK A LOT THAT DAY!

• Bring your camera, charged batteries, and empty storage cards.

• Make sure you bring comfortable shoes and dress appropriate. It is summer time, bring sun protection - hats, sunscreen, shades.

• Bring some snacks and water. The meatpacking district has lots of food options, but once we are on the High Line, it will be more difficult.

• As always, please be on time. Allow yourself enough travel time and check the MTA for any subway updates.

• If you have any questions, text me only before the day of the event. Please make sure you identify yourself in your message, so I know who your are. Please don't email me via the Meetup website shortly before or during the Meetup. I'm not constantly checking my emails. Thank you!

I hope to see guys soon.

    Sally,
Thanks for all your comments. Loved the Metallic concept. I will definitely continue looking for the shiny stuff!
A job well done by you and Verena. Sorry I left early on the HighLine - couldn't bear the crowds and I'm definitely not claustrophobic! I had been there two weeks ago when it was pouring and after the rain stopped it was just about empty up there. A definite rarity and joy!

No worries, Susan. We're glad you had fun. Hope to see you at an event soon... :)

Sally finally tomorrow is here, I have the pleasure of meeting you and Verena I'm very excited. 18-55mm and[masked] mm are the lenses I have until my ordered tamron is mailed. Which one should I bring?

      June 14, 2013

    • Sally

I suggest 55-250. The plan is to catch close ups and as much detail as you can.

      June 15, 2013

  • John D.

Why is Jackson Square a triangle?

    1 · June 14, 2013

  • Christine N.

anyone can recommend a great macro tamron lens they have so many options

    June 13, 2013

    • John D.

BTW there is another option here. Canon has a 50mm 2.5 macro. goes to 1:2. Quite sharp and cheap. It's an old design and focuses a bit slowly but it also doubles as a pretty fast 50mm

      June 14, 2013

    • Christine N.

      Thanks so much John :-)

      June 14, 2013

  • Verena

And yes, unfortunately, Boris, changes are low that there will be ANY clouds on Saturday. :)

    June 13, 2013

  • Verena

The forecast for Saturday's meetup is GORGEOUS! Sunny with ZERO percent chance of rain and temperatures in the low 80s. AWESOME! Don't forget your sun protection!

For those who may have difficulties to find me, I'll be wearing a RED baseball cap and possibly a RED top. If you see RED, that's because of me ,)

I'll be waiting inside Jackson Square Park at the fountain. Don't forget to print a map if you are not familiar with the area. CU Saturday. :)

    June 13, 2013

  • Christine N.

any special lenses for this shoot?

    June 11, 2013

    • Verena

Marie-Chrisine, I recommend close up & zoom lenses. Bring a macro if you have or maybe a lens with a shallow depth of field, a low aperture number (1.2,1.4,2.8,3.5). Looking forward to meeting you.

      1 · June 11, 2013

Thanks Verena, lovely name btw :-) see u Saturday yaye

      June 13, 2013

  • marcie d.

I have macro setting on my Nikon D3100 should that be ok?

    June 13, 2013

    • Ely

Marcie, the Macro setting on your nikon Dslr will only be a suggestion for settings by the camera manfacturer, just like the portrait setting , sports setting , etc. In general, it will provided JPEGS that are sharpened somewhat, have true colors and probably slightly increased contrast. I am assuming from your question that you don't shoot in RAW and that you use the automatic shooting modes of your camera. Find me before the meet up and I would be happy to explain a little about what these settings do and don't do.

      1 · June 13, 2013

    • marcie d.

Thanks guys for the respond. I try not to stay on auto and play with my manual settings. New to the photo world so any suggestions are greatly appreciated. See you Saturday..

      June 13, 2013

  • Christine N.

I don't work on Fridays, so I'm beginning my weekend as of tonight. One more day until I meet you all :-)

    June 13, 2013

  • Christine N.

wow, finally i get to meet you wonderful people. Every time I wanted to participate something kept me, from broken down car to having the flu. Not this time I am here to play.....see you all Saturday. Can't wait to meet Verena and Sally you ladies are talented and fun can't wait to learn from you both. :-)

    2 · June 10, 2013

  • John D.

Agreed on the macro lens and pretty much going with the same setup. Took a couple of practice shots and found I needed to cut some glare and reflections on some shiny surfaces so I'm going to bring a polarizing filter on he assumption it will be sunny

    June 10, 2013

    • Ely

John I hate ot be the bearer of bad news but circular polarizers do not have an effect on shiny metalic objects. The reason polarizers work is because on surfaces that are transparent or semi transparent the light is dispersed as it travels through the medium, and thus the polarizing filter can "strain out" the stray or randomly dispersed rays of light. A shiny metalic object does not absorb light nor does it let light permeate its surface thus there is no scattered light from it which to polarize.

      1 · June 10, 2013

    • John D.

Hardly bad news, one less thing to carry. Thanks

      June 10, 2013

  • Sally

This is a good event to practice macro photography. I will be bringing my 105mm f/2.8, and as Verena mentioned - keep your camera bag light as we will be on our feet for a long while.
