Summer Workshop 2013 - Outdoor Portrait Photography with Natural Light

Note: The $6.00 fee is refundable only if this event is cancelled.

** PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE DESCRIPTION.  CHECK THIS EVENT PAGE PERIODICALLY FOR ANY UPDATES OR CHANGES.  THANK YOU. **

Jordi is a professional photographer from Spain and will kindly teach us (weather permitting) how to take beautiful portraits using natural light, aka the Sun!!  This will be a great opportunity for those who want to learn how to capture people on location. Whatever you're goal is; birthday parties, anniversaries, or something more - this workshop can be a stepping stone. Also, we plan to have a special surprise at the end of the lesson.  The only way you will find out is to sign up and join us!!

- We will meet at the staircase in front of the American Indian Museum.  Then we'll find a cool, shaded area in Battery Park to start the workshop.  Closest subway stations are Bowling Green (4,5), Whitehall Street (R) and South Ferry (1).

- To RSVP for this event, there is a $6 fee to be paid with PayPal.  If you do not have a PayPal account, you can register here: www.PayPal.com.  The fee is refundable only if this workshop is cancelled. The deadline to sign up is 24 hours before the event.

- This event begins at 12pm sharp!!  Please be on time!!  Check for service changes and delays.  Give yourself extra time to travel.  Once the event begins, I will not answer my phone - as it will be disruptive during the lesson. Usually our workshops run on an average of 1 hour.

- Items to bring:

a. Pen & Notepad
b. Your Camera
c. Your Camera's manual (we advise you to skim through it before the lesson)
d. Snacks and a drink to stay hydrated
e. Sunblock and bug repellent

- Make sure you format your memory cards and charge your batteries.

1. We will NOT be teaching you how to use your own camera. There are too many models from too many manufacturers to know them all. We can not stop the class mid-sentence to try and figure out your particular model. Please read your user manual and/or bring it with you for reference!

2. You will not leave the class shooting like Ansel Adams! You must practice and mess up A LOT! After a while , it'll come naturally.

- Please hold your questions until the end of the lesson.  Jordi, Brooklyn and I will try to go around and assist anyone that needs help.

- Details of this event can change at anytime. Please check in periodically for updates.

We are both looking forward to share this knowledge and to help you all find your way to your own photographic style. If you have any questions, call or text me a message before the day of the event, or you can email me through my meetup profile. Please make sure you identify yourself in your message so I know who you are.

UPDATE 7/17/13 - We may have some models to help us out in return for images for their portfolio.  Please be sure to connect with them and exchange email addresses.  Also, the current forecast for this event is 60% chance of scattered thunderstorms and potential for severe thunderstorms.  I will keep watch of the weather and will send a final email the night before the event on whether or not this event will take place.  Thank you.

UPDATE 7/20/13 – This workshop WILL TAKE PLACE!! The forecast is high 90s with 30% chance of isolated thunderstorms, so we’re going for it!! But bring protection for your gear just in case.  Also make sure you bring plenty of water to stay hydrated, sunscreen and bug repellent. BE ON TIME!!  Weekend subway service is always slow.  The R train is running on the D and M lines in the city today, so find other alternatives to get to the meetup point on time.  Also, if you missed the deadline and wish to attend, you can pay cash at the meetup point; see me. Please read the entire description of this workshop thoroughly one last time, and please be patient with Jordi’s English.  Hold your questions until the end of the lesson. Looking forward to seeing you soon!!

Never saw the allure, however, thought I'd try 'portraiture', found I was uninterested, though - probably just me as many seemed ok with it. The 'Meetup' was hampered somewhat, imho, by the photographer's poor English and inability to speak up. Sorry.

    July 20, 2013

    • Jordi

Hi Bill. I think you are right and I'm sorry about my speaking (and understanding) difficulties. A little due to nerves, and much to my poor English, I did not explained how I wanted. Anyway, thank you for coming and It's been a pleasure to meet you.

Thanks, Jordi, language difficulties certainly hamper being personable and would make any speaker 'nervous'. A credit to you for making the most of a difficult situation. It was a pleasure meeting you too.

I want to thank the organizers and models for allowing us to perfect our craft. This was my first time shooting Portrait models. I got some good shots, and some not so good shots. I am going to upload some shortly. However, I would like to upload all the pics to my SKYDRIVE and provide the models access to download any of the pictures they want. Thanks again to all

Great event. Thanks to Sally for organizing. Learning from Jordi and his model wife, Eli and Brooklyn Born for their tips. While I need more work to focus and get in a great shot, learned from this and appreciate efforts of all!.
Sally, what is the model of the mini tripod. Interested in purchasing one myself.
Again thanks for all the efforts. And Jordi, you did great, and on one on one helpful.

First, thanks for all the organizers and the instructors organizing this workshop.
It was my first meet up with this group, and I enjoyed it very much. The workshop was very informative, I learned a lot about taking better portraits with the sun and all different kinds of reflectors. Unfortunately, I couldn't stay until the end of the workshop. Will absolutely do it next time.

Thank you all for come to this first class of portrait and also for your patience and understanding. I had a really nice time with you, and It's been a good opportunity to know great and interesting people. I know it was a little hard to understand me, so between today and tomorrow I will post in my blog (bakedpixels.net) all the contents of this class. If you have some question or would like to say something, please feel free to add a comment in it.
I will try to do more participative and understandable the next class of portrait with flash, and also we will review the main concepts for take good portrait shots.
Thanks also to Sally and Brooklyn Born for its support.

I had a great time. One of the best meetups for me. I was able to learn hands on and now I can apply It to my shoots. Thanks to Jordi, Brooklyn, Sally and everyone else that gave pointers and advice. The weather was great and so were the people. Hope we can do this again soon with more hands on events. Asta la proxima! Till next time.

What a great day it was to learn how to shoot portraits with natural light! Not as hot and humid as forecasted, and not a dark cloud in the sky!! Found a cooling shade by the water in Battery Park. Had a wonderful lesson and gave out a prize for best portrait of the day. Ate food, had drinks, had laughs --- always fun with the group. Let's all thank Jordi for sharing his knowledge, as well as the great help from Brooklyn Born and Ely, and our two models of the day. I hope that those who have attended today's workshop has learned better ideas about to to take better portraits with the sun... :)

Learn a lot on this meetup, so many and yet simple adjustment can make a good portrait into a great portrait. I might have underestimated portrait photography. It can be a complex task to work with a live object and try to keep your composition and all the other little details of the process on point. Looking forward to the next portrait meetup.

Excellent meetup with kudos to Sally, who always does a great job. And Brooklyn Born was
also very helpful. The weather held up and I believe we all learned something about usîng

Is there any chance of holding Meet-ups on days other than Saturdays (at noon)? Some of these sound great but I can't make any if they are all held on the same day each time.

Unfortunately we can't. These workshops are scheduled to the instructor's availability to teach.
