Summer Workshop 2013 - Outdoor Portrait Photography with Flash

Note: The $6.00 fee is refundable only if this event is cancelled.

photo designed by Jordi :)

** PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE DESCRIPTION.  CHECK THIS EVENT PAGE PERIODICALLY FOR ANY UPDATES OR CHANGES.  THANK YOU. **

Jordi is a professional photographer from Spain and will kindly teach us how to take beautiful portraits using a off-camera flash.  This will be a great opportunity for those who want to learn how to capture people on location. Whatever you're goal is; birthday parties, anniversaries, or something more - this workshop can be a stepping stone.

- We will meet at the staircase in front of the American Indian Museum.  Then we'll find a cool, shaded area in Battery Park to start the workshop.  Closest subway stations are Bowling Green (4,5), Whitehall Street (R) and South Ferry (1).

- To RSVP for this event, there is a $6 fee to be paid with PayPal.  If you do not have a PayPal account, you can register here: www.PayPal.com.  The fee is refundable only if this workshop is cancelled.

Update 7/22/13 - The deadline to sign up is 3 hours prior to the start of the workshop.

- This event begins at 12pm sharp!!  Please be on time!!  Check for service changes and delays.  Give yourself extra time to travel.  Once the event begins, I will not answer my phone - as it will be disruptive during the lesson. Usually our workshops run on an average of 1 hour.

- Items to bring:

a. Pen & Notepad
b. Your Camera & Flash (meaning "off-camera flash, shoe flash or speed light")
c. Your Camera's manual (we advise you to skim through it before the lesson)
d. Snacks and a drink to stay hydrated
e. Sunblock and bug repellent

- Make sure you format your memory cards and charge your batteries.

1. We will NOT be teaching you how to use your own camera. There are too many models from too many manufacturers to know them all. We can not stop the class mid-sentence to try and figure out your particular model. Please read your user manual and/or bring it with you for reference!

2. You will not leave the class shooting like Ansel Adams! You must practice and mess up A LOT! After a while , it'll come naturally.

- Please hold your questions until the end of the lesson.  Jordi, Brooklyn and I will try to go around and assist anyone that needs help.

- Details of this event can change at anytime. Please check in periodically for updates.

We are both looking forward to share this knowledge and to help you all find your way to your own photographic style. If you have any questions, call or text me a message before the day of the event, or you can email me through my meetup profile. Please make sure you identify yourself in your message so I know who you are.

Also, PLEASE BE ON TIME!! The R train is not running between Lower Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn – find an alternate route to get to the meetup point, like the 4 or 5 trains. See you all soon!! :)

Amazon has the Yongnuo manual YN-560 II Speedlight Flash for Canon and Nikon for $59.00. This flash has over 500 review!!!
It supports external battery pack as well.

Michael, While I agree that the price is awesome, unless someone already has a set of triggers that they plan on using AND they are relatively expensive/ high quality triggers, I would strongly suggest purchasing the YN-560 III instead. it is 18 dollars more however it has built into it full wireless compatability with the Yongnuo Yingnuo RF-602 and RF- 603 triggers. In simplest terms what that means is if your kit consists of one or two of these flashes, you only need to carry a singel RF-602/603 trigger and you can fire these flashes at over 150 feet away with no external receivers, no external battery issues, not additional height from mounting a flash on receiver. Additonally, there are promising rumors that sometime soon Yongnuo will introduce a trigger system that will let you remotely control power output of these flashes. This seems very likley as the software is already built in and visiable in the display on the YN-560 III.

Thank you guys for make the effort and attend this meetup in such a rainy day... and thanks one more time for your patience with my poor English.
Sometimes is a little hard to be far away from relatives, so is so nice to feel part of this another "photographic" family.
    See you soon!

Your presentation was fun and informative; and your command of English is superb. I wish I had the same fluency for Catalan... moltes gràcies!!!

Thanks for posting Sally. I am just going to add my $0.02 cents on this article as it is a recurring theme in many similar articles... If you are just starting out getting a flash off of the hotshoe you DO NOT need to buy a flash made by the same company as you camera and pay[masked] dollars. You also ABSOLUTELY do not need to spend a couple of hundred dollars on pocket wizard remote triggers either. Instead I would suggest that if you dont have a flash yet, you buy a completely manual flash for about 100 bucks and a $35 set of triggers. Both are more than good enough and more than reliable enough for years of casual and infrequent use.

Thank you to Sally and Verena for organizing a great meetup and bringing us all together; to Jordi and Brooklyn Born, for their instruction, patience and sharing of their knowledge and skills and to all our fellow members and guest models who were photographed so that we could practice our craft.

I was out front of the Museum and didn't see anyone. I've arrived at 12:05pm. Hung around for a hour and a half. When is the next one and what would the contact info be?

maybe next time. I didn't realize Battery park was the meetup spot. It was posted that the museum was the location.

      August 4, 2013

    • Sally

As the description says, the meetup point was the museum and then we moved to Battery Park. We left the meetup point at 12pm sharp.

I had a fantastic time, loved it! I really learned a lot today about balancing the Ambient light and flash to get a more natural looking photo. Excellent workshop thanks to all involved.

I had a fantastic time as usual, Sally did an awesome job in organizing this event. I am so glad to have Verena back, she made a great model for our group, thanks V. To Jordi, I know we will all agree that he delivered his lesson, and we did learn. Thanks to our favorite Co-pilots Brooklyn-Born and Ely thank you for your all your help. A special thank you to Ely who took the time to give examples of the do's and don't of flash lighting. He also, provided one-on-one tips & critiques at the end.

As a member of more than one photography meetup, I can honestly say this is by far my favorite. Here we are strangers from different towns, boro's, careers, backgrounds and even state coming together to learn and have a nice time together. That doesn't happen often or easy we all should applause one another, and I look forward to next time.

Anybody find a black windbreaker, US Open logo on the front? I dropped it while I was fussing with my camera.....

Thank you those who arrived on time and braved the brief rain. The sky cleared up and we had another successful workshop by Jordi, with practice and help from Brooklyn Born, Verena and Ely. We held another contest for best photo of the day and awarded a prize. Looking forward to seeing everyone's results in the album!! :)

Hey Sally! I was all packed up and ready to leave when... saw all these people carrying open umbrellas. So.. this is just to let you know I am no longer joining you downtown (no problem with the fee). Hopefully you and Jordi will be available and organize another session some other time. I will see you guys on August 24th (perhaps we all should think of an indoors alternative?). Cheers! Ana

I want to make it to this one. I have a speedlite but no radio trigger, i'll be taking it just in case someone could use it. Will we have use of a tripod for this event? Maybe for the flash?

    August 2, 2013

    • Sally

Not sure if tripods will be used, but you can bring yours if you want to.

    Hi Sally,
I have a built in flash, is it ok.

    July 28, 2013

    • Sally

Hi Fazil! You can use your built in flash if you want, but the workshop will be tailored to the off-camera flash aka shoe flash or speed light.

      July 29, 2013

  • Ivy G.

Hey Sally, I don't have flash but I would love to attend to this class as I was not able to come for the last one, is that ok?

    July 22, 2013

    • Sally

If you don't have a flash and still would like to sign up, that's fine. You can always rent a flash at Adorama or B&H if you want.
