New York City Holiday Lights 2013

UPDATE 12/5/13: Since the forecast for 90% rain has not changed and I am feeling “under the weather”, I am rescheduling the Holiday Lights photowalk from Friday 12/6/13 -- to Friday 12/13/13.  Same meetup place and same meetup time.

As of 12/4/13, the forecast for this event is 90% chance of light rain with temperatures in the mid 40s and dropping. I will send out an email either tomorrow night or Friday morning on whether or not this event will be re-scheduled to the following Friday 12/13/2013. If you are not on the mailing list, you can change your personal settings to receive emails. Or, you can check in on this page for updates. Thanks.

UPDATED 11/12/13

Join us for our free New York City Holiday Lights Photowalk after work to capture the beautiful holiday lights in Midtown Manhattan.

We will meet in front of the Chase Bank on 34th Street and 5th Avenue and walk our way uptown.  Nearest subway is 34th and 6th (B, D, F, M, N, Q and R). The general plan is to stop by Herald Square, Byrant Park, the 6th Avenue Display, and the last stop is Rockefeller Center (which will be loaded with tourists, FYI).

WARNING: The weather will most likely be brutal.  I've hosted holiday walks in the past and some people have complained and left the walk early.  PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE PROPERLY DRESSED FOR THE WALK!! IT WILL BE VERY COLD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, there will only be one bathroom break at Herald Square.  You can use the bathrooms in Macy's or if you walk west on 34th Street you can use the bathrooms at Old Navy. Of course along the way we can stop at an open Starbucks or other shop for coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

Although night and long exposures are always better with tripods, I do not recommend them for this walk - especially with high security and many, many tourists.  If you have a strong, table-top tripod, or maybe even a monopod, those would be a better choice.  I do recommend this mini tripod - which can hold my DSLR with my heavy macro lens:

I am removing the limit from the RSVP list so that others who want to join the group can sign up. But if you sign up and can't make it, please be courteous and change it from "yes" to "no" so that I have a better idea of how many people will actually be attending. For those who are discouraged by large groups, don't be for this one.  Usually not everyone attends.

As usual, please be on time.  I will not answer calls or texts after 7pm.  The photowalk is not on a specific schedule, but I will do my best to post on this event page where we are in case you are running late and have the meetup app on your phone.  Make sure you have your charged batteries and empty memory cards, and pack light - we're walking approximately 15-20 blocks.

I hope you will join me. If you have any questions, call or text me a message before the day of the event, or you can email me through my meetup profile. Please make sure you identify yourself in your message so I know who you are.

hi I was a great workshop, beginning slowly for beginners and then going to advanced ones. well done!
thanks Verena to organize this workshop
Can we have a memo about all the gear we need for beginners and advanced people with brands and prices?

it's hard to answer ur question cause there are like gazillion brands and equipment out there for studio lighting whether it's pro or home studio, and don't start talken about the prices, they could be enormous and can swallow u and ur wallet specially if u have GAS... i wouldreally recommend reading this first http://www.dpreview.c...

and as a rule, don't buy anything yet until u try and u feel like u need this extra equipment, u can start by lighting kit from the link above with a set of reflectors, then decide urself what extra equipment u need

Fellow Photographers: These items are great to keep in your pockets or even your gloves and boots. They are usually sold at local drug stores and sporting goods stores. You can also order a box of them on Amazon:

Hi all here is a tip that might make the difference between staying and vetting some great shots or leaving due to the frigid cold... since you only need your thumb and first finger to work your camera for the most part, consider buying a $5.00 pair of polar tec or fleece type gloves from a street vendor. Then take a scisorr and carefully snip about 1/3 of the way across the inner part of the first finger and thumb right below where your first finger joint will be. You wear the cut glove on your right hand and your really warm regular glove on your left. You should be able to use your teeth to pull the tips off and on the right hand glove you snipped to let you shoot than get your fingers out of the cold. You should be able focus with even thick gloves . This is a great time to use a neck strap though since cold hands with gloves on tend to drop things.. see you all tomorrow

Since I found out I have unused vacation days left, I used one of them to take off this friday so that I can be able to meet up with you all at the right time and place :-) I cant wait!! :-D

WARNING - As of 12/10/13, the forecast for this photowalk is mostly cloudy, low 30s and the temperature will drop, so it will be very cold. Dress appropriately; and may I suggest long underwear and socks made of polyester, acrylic or merino wool. DO NOT WEAR COTTON, or else you will be freezing!!

what's the biggest group you've had go on a walk?

      December 9, 2013

    • Sally

We never hosted a group larger than 50-55 people. That's why I'm asking people to please be courteous and change the RSVP if they will not attend.
