Return to the Middle Ages

Hello fellow photographers.

The annual Medieval Festival in Fort Tyron Park (Northern Manhattan) is just a few weeks away. Let's go back in time and enjoy the art, music, lifestyle and FOOD of the Middle Ages.

We will meet at 10:30AM AT THE MAIN ENTRANCE of the Cloisters Museum and explore it's architecture before we move to the festival. There are a couple of benches right next to the bus stop. I'll wait there.

Please be aware that we will NOT enter as a group, as this requires registration 4 weeks in advance. I'd recommend splitting up in smaller groups before we make a run to the cashier inside. The Cloisters is part of the MET and has a SUGGESTED admission of $25. This means you don't have to pay the full amount, you basically can pay what you want (I usually pay $5). But you can also use the ticket for the same day to visit the MET.

I think TRIPODS AND LARGE BACKPACKS ARE NOT ALLOWED at the Cloisters. Save yourself some energy and don't drag it along. The medieval festival will be crowded as well, so just keep your equipment light!

We will MEET AT 12:00PM AT THE MAIN ENTRANCE OF THE CLOISTERS AGAIN (for those who want to continue to the medieval festival or for those who are coming later). The festival takes place right around the premisses of the Cloister. WE WILL NOT MEET AGAIN and probably loose each other in the crowds anyway. Of course, feel free to stick together in smaller groups. The festival ends at 6PM. There are plenty of stands for food, handcrafts, arts... There is also a couple of tournaments you may want to watch. Be early at the tournament field, it will be crowded!

This is the program:

12:00: Team USA - The Battle of Nations

12:30: Sky Hunters in Flight - Falconry

1:00: Robin Hood - A Living Chess Match

1:30: New York Lyric Circus - Joey the Jester.

2:00: Joust Tournament by Round Table Productions

2:30: Sky Hunters in Flight - Falconry

3:00: Robin Hood - A Living Chess Match.

4:00: The Children's Parade - All Welcome to Join the Fun!!

4:30: Knights of Avalon - Act III

5:00: The Grand Joust Tournament

And here is a link to the map of the festival. I'd recommend you bring a copy; if you are not familiar with the area.

• Bring some snacks and water, or grab something to eat at one of the many food stands.

• Dress appropriate for the weather. It may be a little chilly inside the museum.

• As always, please be on time. Allow yourself enough travel time and check the MTA for any subway updates. I won’t be able to take calls after the meetup starts.

• If you have any questions, text me only before the day of the event. Please make sure you identify yourself in your message, so I know who you are. Please don't email me via the Meetup website shortly before or during the Meetup. I'm not constantly checking my emails. Thank you!

How to get to the Cloisters:

By Subway/Bus
Take the A train to 190th Street and exit the station by elevator. Walk north along Margaret Corbin Drive for approximately ten minutes or transfer to the M4 bus and ride north one stop. If you are coming from the Museum's Main Building, you may also take the M4 bus directly from Madison Avenue/83rd Street to the last stop. (Please allow more time for this option.)

By Car
Take Henry Hudson Parkway northbound to the first exit after George Washington Bridge (Fort Tryon Park—The Cloisters). This exit is only accessible from the northbound lane; if coming from the north, take Henry Hudson Parkway southbound to exit 14–15, make a U-turn, and travel north one mile to the exit marked Fort Tryon Park—The Cloisters.

Parking

Visitors to The Cloisters may use free city parking available in Fort Tryon Park.

I hope to see guys soon.

I think posting 30+ photos is a bit excessive. Give someone else a chance!!!

Thanks Verena for organizing another great Meetup. I didn't get to
meet you or other Photographers in our group, but I was able to capture some cool images, although the crowds got pretty thick by
2pm. Happy to post 13 images I captured today out of about 150 I
    shot.

    September 29, 2013

  • Christine N.

Can't make it but will attend the next meet :-)

Automobile traffic will be shut off to the Park at about 9AM. All things for the Faire will have loaded in by then and only foot traffic allowed. To get to The Cloisters, either come up from Dyckman st or 190th St Subway stop. There will be Faire signs all over the place.

    September 28, 2013

  • Jennalaw

A note on transportation - there is no parking around Ft Tryon Park the day of the Faire. Many of the roads get closed to all but emergency vehicles, and sometimes they will not allow bus routes to end at the park. Check MTA for travel info.

    September 28, 2013

    • Alfonso

I know that when I attended a couple of years ago that there was only easier parking south of the Cloisters on various side streets, but parking is extremely limited especially as there are no parking restrictions on Sunday....I had to park and walk about 10 blocks to reach the Ft. Tryron Park entrance....

      1 · September 28, 2013

  • Alfonso

We'll be arriving for the festival only....The main entrance to The Cloisters is by the traffic circle correct?

    September 28, 2013

    • Verena

Alfonso, I'm not exactly sure where the traffic circle is you are referring to, but there is a little island with benches and a bus stop on the west side of the Margaret Corbin Drive, when you are opposite the Cloisters. There is some parking to the right and the building is to the left. You won't miss the main entrance (see pictures above). I'll wait at the benches to the bus stop on that little island.

      1 · September 28, 2013

    • Alfonso

Ah, ok...I know where that is...I confused The Cloisters entrance with the entrance to Ft. Tryron Park at the circle by Cabrini Blvd. and Washington Ave.

      September 28, 2013

  • Jennalaw

I will be there (in garb) to enjoy the day with our group as well as another Meetup.
