Steel Wool Photography!! What is it exactly?

It’s a form of light painting where you create awesome portals, tunnels, domes, and rain of light with burning steel wool.  Here are some examples:

Note: Brooklyn Born, myself, and a few other friends of mine recently began practicing Steel Wool Photography, where the results can be very beautiful, but also very dangerous. We will all (the whole group, not just the hosts) be handling burning steel wool, so I am emphasizing this disclaimer for this particular workshop:

Disclaimer: Participation in these events requires that you assume all risks associated with these activities, and that the Organizers, Co-Organizers and Event Hosts are in no way liable for any loss or injury as a result of your participation. In other words, you are attending these events at your own risk!!

With that said, the following list contains must-have supplies for steel wool photography.  We will not be providing any of these supplies to the group.  You have to buy all these supplies and assemble the chain yourself:

·  DSLR Camera – We will be shooting in Manual Mode!! Make sure you know how to access your Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, Metering, and Auto/Manual Switch on your lens. We will not be teaching you how to use your specific camera so PLEASE REVIEW YOUR CAMERA’S MANUAL!! Don't forget your charged batteries and empty storage cards.

·  Tripod – This is a MUST for any long exposure photography. Be warned that it may get damaged in sand and/or water.

·  A small flashlight – it can be very dark outside so you will need to see what you’re doing.

·  Goggles – to protect your eyes

·  Hats and Hoodies – to protect your hair, scalp and body.

·  Gloves – to protect your hands.

·  One or Two Packs of Fine Steel Wool – make sure the package says “0”, “00” or “000”.  The finer the steel wool, the better it will burn.  Do not buy medium or coarse – they won’t burn.

·  One Kitchen Whisk – with a loop at the end.  Don’t buy a cheap 99 cent one because it won’t last the night.

·  One dog leash with a clip – has to be at least the length of your arm.  The metal ones would be best.

·  Black Electrical Tape - to secure the whisk to the dog leash.

·  A lighter, igniter, or a 9 volt battery to set the steel wool on fire.

·  To assemble your chain, clip the dog leash to the kitchen whisk's loop and secure it with the electrical tape so it doesn't fly off when you spin it.  If your whisk does not have a loop, you can secure the leash against the handle of the whisk with the electrical tape.

·  Weather permitting - we will be meeting in front of Dunkin Donuts on the corner of Stillwell and Surf Streets at 4pm sharp!!  Take the D, F, N or Q train to the last stop in Brooklyn.  Give yourself plenty of time to travel because this workshop will start as scheduled.  Please be on time, as the sun will start setting around 4:30pm.

·  Please dress appropriately for the weather. We will be out in an open space and with possible winds, the winter temperature will be brutal.

·  NOTE:  I cannot guarantee there will be anyplace nearby that is open for food or bathrooms, so you are warned!!

·  Details of this event can change at anytime. Please check in periodically for possible updates.

I hope you will join us. If you have any questions, call or text me a message before the day of the event, or you can email me through my meetup profile. Please make sure you identify yourself in your message so I know who you are.

UPDATE 12/27/13

Hello Fellow Photographers:

I am truly looking forward to Brooklyn Born’s workshop on Steel Wool Photography tomorrow afternoon. The forecast is clear skies, 45 degrees – but it will feel like 39 degrees and the temperature will drop, so bundle up!! Just a few reminders for this workshop:
• SAFETY SAFETY SAFETY!! Please make sure you are covered and have your hats/hoodies/goggles, etc.
• DISCLAIMER: Participation in these events requires that you assume all risks associated with these activities, and that the Organizers, Co-Organizers and Event Hosts are in no way liable for any loss or injury as a result of your participation. In other words, you are attending these events at your own risk!!

• Please be on time! I will not be checking my phone after 4pm.
• When you arrive to the meetup point, please see me to check in with the group. I will be checking attendance. If you are not on the RSVP list, you must pay $10. Please have exact change.
• This is a workshop that will have a lesson and a practice session. ALL ATTENDANTS MUST PARTICIPATE, not just shoot photos of other people spinning. Make sure you have all your gear and your supplies ready. We will be splitting up in small groups to shoot AND spin!!
• BE WARNED that there may not be any place open nearby for food or bathrooms.

Please review all the details on the event above, and I’ll see you tomorrow afternoon!! ☺

Awesome meetup last night. The only frustration we had was the lighters dying because of the wind. My recommendation next time would be to bring a blow torch http://www.amazon.com/BonJour-Cr%C3%A8me-Br%C3%BBl%C3%A9e-Professional-Culinary/dp/B001DITG5S

We used a 9volt battery and it worked great.

It seems a 9volt is the best option under any condition, except for rain or snow of course.

do you have any history about this effect and who came up with it ??? it sounds bizarre and awesome - i wont be able to attend but am very curious to see how it's actually accomplished - maybe those who participate can take some photos of the "how to" aspects of this ??? have fun

    December 23, 2013

    • Sally

Hi Anne! I do not know the history of steel wool photography. Some of us stumbled on this while viewing other people's photos and YouTube videos. There are plenty of videos out there that shows how it's done. But when you actually do it yourself, it's simply awesome!!! :)

Hi everyone. Just want to mention that I bought all the supplies at Home Depot. Steel wool, 5 ft of chain, a spring link to hook the chain to the wisk, a pair of goggles and electrical tape, all for under $14.00
I got the wisk at Shop Rite for $ 1.50 The only thing I don't have is a raggedy outfit! :-(
Someone might want to share an old jacket or something?
Anyway, I'm excited and am looking forward to meet y'all tomorrow.

Hi Barbara: I was wondering if you would mind sharing your supplies, since I'm stuck at work until 2:30PM and dont have time to pick up the supplies, I'll be more than happy to pay you for your troubles if you decide to share.

  • Eddie K.

where can I buy the supplies?

    December 24, 2013

    • Sally

You'll have to go to various stores; hardware store for steel wool, pet store for dog leash, etc.

      December 25, 2013

  • Brooklyn B.

Hello everyone. A few more notes about Steel Wool Photography. 1. I can't stress safety enough. Ask me to show you the scar on my neck and I will show you what happens when your not careful or have cheap supplies. 2. A wireless remote would be really handy to take selfies while spinning steel wool. You don't have to, but it helps if you don't have someone to press the shutter for you. We'll be in a group, but when you leave, it may be a good investment if you're flying solo next time. 3. Do NOT wear good clothing. Wear your most raggedy shirts and pants. Remember that these are flaming pieces of metal flying and if they don't burn out before they get to you, expect some holes. Just ask Boris is you don't believe me. (He deserved it though)

That's all I got for now. See you all soon.

Aside from the required items to bring, I'm bringing 22-inch glow sticks if anyone wants to experiment with them. BTW I got 16 fine steel wool '0000' from Amazon for $4.78. I hope they work.
