Free Summer Workshop 2012 - Manual Mode

** PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE DESCRIPTION. CHECK THIS EVENT PAGE PERIODICALLY FOR ANY UPDATES OR CHANGES. THANK YOU. **

** UPDATE 8/2/12 **

Brooklyn Born will be teaching a series of photography lessons - for free!! This fourth lesson (item highlighted in the list below) is the feature we will discuss:

1. Aperture
2. Shutter Speed
3. ISO
4. Manual Mode - that combines all three features

This will be a great opportunity for members with DLSR / SLR settings to take more control of their cameras. Brooklyn may also cover other features and techniques that could help compose and expose better photographs.

- We will meet under the Arch on 5th Avenue and Washington Square North. Then we'll find a cool, shaded area in the park to start the workshop. Closest subway station is West 4th Street/Washington Square (A/B/C/D/E/F/M).

- Currently the forecast is 90 degrees with 20% chance of rain. If the weather changes and does not permit us to have this workshop outside, the meetup point will be relocated inside the Sony Atrium Plaza @ 550 Madison Avenue between 55th and 56th Streets.

- This event begins at 12pm sharp!! Please be on time!! Check for service changes and delays. Give yourself extra time to travel. Once the event begins, I will not answer my phone - as it will be disruptive during the lesson. Usually Brooklyn's workshops run for around 1 hour.

- Click on the link below to save & print the cheat sheet (color recommended). Bring it to the lesson:

Manual Mode Cheat Sheet

- Other items to bring:

a. Pen & Notepad
b. Your Camera
c. Your Camera's manual (we advise you to skim through it before the lesson)
d. Snacks and a drink to stay hydrated
e. Sunblock and bug repellent

- Make sure you format your memory cards and charge your batteries.

- As Brooklyn mentioned on the message board:

1. We will NOT be teaching you how to use your own camera. There are too many models from too many manufacturers to know them all. We can not stop the class mid-sentence to try and figure out your particular model. Please read your user manual and/or bring it with you for reference!

2. These classes are meant to teach the basics of controlling your aperture, shutter speed, ISO and metering. The last class will be meant to put it all together and shoot completely in manual. You will not leave the class shooting like Ansel Adams! You must practice and mess up A LOT! After a while , it'll come naturally.

- Please hold your questions until the end of the lesson. Brooklyn, Boris and I will try to go around and assist anyone that needs help.

- IMPORTANT!! > Brooklyn does not like to get his picture taken, so please do not take pictures of him. If anyone takes a picture of him - the lesson will be cancelled on the spot!!

- Be courteous by updating your RSVP accordingly. If you RSVP “yes” and you can’t make it, change your RSVP to “no”.

- Please check in on this event page periodically for any updates or changes.

We are both looking forward to share this basic knowledge and to help you all find your way to your own photographic style.

If you have any questions, send me an email or a text message before the day of the event. Please make sure you identify yourself in your message so I know who you are.

Thank you very much Sally, Boris, and Brooklyn. I wish we were having another meetup this coming weekend just utilizing what we've learned.

It was a hot and humid day in Washington Square Park, but it was another great workshop. Brooklyn and I picked this venue to mix it up and have everyone shoot different subjects around the park. Thank you to those who were brave enough to tolerate the weather and thank you to everyone who attended all four workshops.

I really loved this meetup. I met fellow passionate photographers - all of whom are extremely talented. We took photos, chatted photography and all in all, had a great day. I will definitely want to do this again!

Semyon, I come from near Rutgers University in NJ and it's much easier to take NJ Transit right to Penn Station and the the E train right to the Meetup. Not only are there parking issues in Manhattan but the GW Bridge is under construction and everyone looks for an alternate route.

    July 31, 2012

  • Sally

Semyon, I don’t drive and I’m pretty sure it will be very difficult to find free parking in Manhattan - especially on the weekends. Again, the meetup point might change. Is there a way to take a train from New Jersey instead?

    July 31, 2012

  • Alex

Sally, how difficult to park there? I'm coming from New Jersey. Better alternatives, suggestions?

    July 31, 2012

  • Sally

Begonia, welcome. For now the meetup point is at the Sony Plaza but it might change as we get closer to the event. So please keep checking on this page. Thanks.

  • Sally

Carey, Semyon, Nanu: yes you can bring one guest.

Hi Sally! This will be my first meetup, so I don't really know how it works. Does the workshop take place in the Sony Building, and then we out to shot somewhere? How long is the workshop? Thank you Sally. Looking forward to my first meetup

    July 31, 2012

  • Alex

I would like to bring a guest with me as well.

    July 28, 2012

Sorry everyone for this last minute decision, but something came up and we have to reschedule this workshop from 7/28 to 8/4. Please keep checking in on this page for other changes and/or updates. Thanks.

I wanted to attend this and the other lessons but had to miss them because I don't have a good working camera, my good camera got stolen in a Starbucks and the one I still have it's defective so the manual controls don't work and the flash sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, so I need to get a new camera before I can take these lessons. :-(

Is there a rain date in case tomorrow turns out to be yucky?

    July 27, 2012

  • Sally

Hi Jenny: Brooklyn just did one lesson so far on Aperture. The next one is this coming Saturday -- for Shutter Speed. Hope to see you there.

My Co-organizer Howie also runs a group called "NYC After Dark". He will be posting some night events soon.

    July 5, 2012

  • Sally

Jeffrey: we do occasionally have night photography meetups. Check out the photos from the latest one from Brooklyn Bridge Park. We will have more this summer so stay tuned.

    July 5, 2012

  • Jeffrey

Is it possible to create a meetup on how to use a tripod or another meetup on night time photography?

    July 4, 2012

  • Seth

    Thanks!!

    June 18, 2012

  • Sally

NOTE - It would be ideal to take the first three lessons before attending this one. This is combining all three parts (Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO).
