PLEASE NOTE THE NEW MEETUP DATE. DUE TO THE WEATHER FORCAST OF SNOW/ RAIN FOR TOMORROW, I'M POSTPONING THIS MEETUP BY ONE WEEK TO 3/23/13. THE MEETUP TIME @ 12:30 STAYS THE SAME. PLEASE UPDATE YOUR RSVP IF NECESSARY.
Though we are still stuck in the cold season, there is always an opportunity to shoot.
This meetup will take place in the New York Botanical Garden, located in the Bronx. The garden's grounds may not be very developed at that time, but the annual Orchid Show is a huge highlight.
"Elaborate and kaleidoscopic displays throughout the galleries of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory explode with orchids in an amazing array of colors, shapes, sizes, and textures. Tens of thousands of blooms--blue and purple vandas, green and yellow cymbidiums, delicate pink and white moth orchids, and more--stand out amid stately palms and exotic tropical leaves."
Meeting Point: In front of the garden's Mosholu Gate entrance @ Southern Boulevard

Meetup Start: 12:30pm
I've been there twice and it's different every year. I'm sure this will be a nice opportunity for flower and macro photography lovers. The show is displayed in a rain proof enclosure, a restaurant and bathrooms are closed by on the grounds.
After talking to the Botanical Garden, I made the decision to not enter the garden under a group rate. Several reasons for that: Group admission is $22 per person. The normal admission is $25. Though getting in as a group is slightly cheaper, we would have to make a reservation for the group 3 weeks in advance AND ALSO PAY FOR IT 3 WEEKS IN ADVANCE. In order to keep us as flexible as possible, I decided not to make a reservation as a group and enter the park as "individuals". I ALSO DECIDED TO EXPAND THE MAX AMOUNT OF ATTENDEES TO 50. We probably will crowd the ticket booth and the actual show that day, but I think a lot of you appreciate the chance to walk with us. There is only a certain number of people able to walk the Orchid Show at a time, so we may have to split up a little. I'll also keep an eye on the weather. Should the forecast call for rain, I would reschedule the meetup. Though the actual Orchid Show is inside, I think it may be nice to explore the rest of the Garden in decent weather. Another reason I didn't go for the group reservation.
With the admission, you are allowed to explore the entire botanical garden, some special exhibitions are excluded, though. The show will be displayed from March 2 to April 22, 2013. The garden is open from 10-6pm, 5pm Jan 15 - Feb 28th.
TRIPODS OR MONOPODS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE EXHIBITION, but you can use them outside.
As always: please be on time. Give yourself enough time to travel and check the subway and bus schedules & service notifications for that day. I will not wait for latecomers. Getting to the botanical garden by public transportation may require several transfers, so plan on some extra time. I updated the meeting time to 12:30pm.
• Bring your camera, charged batteries, and empty storage cards. I highly recommend marco and zoom lenses.
• Make sure you bring comfortable shoes and dress appropriate. You may want to wear layers. It will be chilly outside, but higher temperatures within the conservatory.
• Please be courteous and update your RSVP accordingly. If you RSVP "yes" and you can't make it, change your RSVP to "no". Since this is a limited group count, please consider your fellow photographers if you know you won't make it. I'm sure others will be happy to take an open spot.
• If you have any questions, text me only before the day of the event. Please make sure you identify yourself in your message, so I know who your are. Please don't email me via the Meetup website shortly before or during the Meetup. I'm not constantly checking my emails. Thank you!
I hope to see guys soon.
