Light Painting Night Shoot at Long Island City

** Update 8/18/12 3:45pm **

Currently the forecast for tonight is partly cloudy, high 76 degrees. This event will take place!! Also, please note that this event is not a workshop and it’s FREE!!

Okay people, it’s time again for night photography and light painting!!

The meetup point is by the Pepsi Sign in the park. The closest subway station is Vernon Blvd & Jackson Avenue (7 train).  The sunset is scheduled at 7:49pm.  We can shoot the beautiful New York Cityscape and then create art with lights and long exposures. I will do my best to give a brief intro on light painting to those who haven’t tried it before. After that we can spread out in small groups and practice.

** Bring your own flashlights -- the brighter the better.

** Tripods are highly recommended!!

** Bring your camera’s manual. Everyone’s camera is different and it could be handy in case you need to figure out how to change a setting.

** Make sure your batteries are fully charged and format your memory cards.

** Brings snacks and a drink.

** Dress appropriately for the weather.  It will be cooler by the water.

** Warning!! There may not be bathrooms available in the park, but we could try to find any nearby restaurants that are open and hopefully will allow us to use their facilities.

** Please be courteous and update your RSVP accordingly.  If you RSVP “yes” and you can’t make it, change your RSVP to “no”.

** Please be on time!! Give yourself the extra time to commute -- check for delays and service changes.  I will not wait for late comers.  Once I start the meetup, I will not answer any calls, texts, emails and other messages.

If you have any questions, email or text me only before the day of the event. Please make sure you identify yourself in your message so I know who you are. You can also post your questions and comments below.  Thanks, and see you all there!

I didn't get too much from it other than learning the concepts, a gorgeous sunset, watching lots of creativity happening, talking to lots of people, and even getting a few experimental shots off. And on a perfect night, too.

The security scolded for not having a permit for a photography group of 15 or more, but let us go with a warning. Other than that we had a lot of fun.

For those who are new to light painting and want to get a little idea about how it works, read this information from Wikipedia. This link also has a nice little gallery of light painting. You can see how people can really be creative: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li...

It looks like the expected weather for Saturday is thunderstorms. Is there another date already set up in case of rain?

    August 15, 2012

    • Begonia L.

Sorry if I sounded a little crazy there, I really wanted to go to this meeting, but this Saturday I can't make it, so I saw the light at the end of the tunnel when I saw the weather for Saturday. I didn't mean to be a party pooper :)

      August 16, 2012

    • Sally

@Begonia: no worries. Currently the forecast for Saturday is morning showers, but it should stop around 1pm. See you at the next event… :)

  • Jim C.

How are my chances at finding a parking place near Gantry Plaza State Park? Google search shows mixed results.

    August 13, 2012

    • Greg

really is mixed result. it's a popular part of town, i think you would find something within 5 blocks.

      August 14, 2012

  • Sally

@Jim: Free parking may be difficult. If you can, take mass transit. If not you may have to leave your car at a parking lot on 5th Street between 47th Road and 47th Avenue.

    August 13, 2012

    • Sally

      * at a parking garage...
