NYCP 3rd Anniversary: Monochromatic Magic Challenge

Sample

Color                      Monochrome

Website: http://www.bbg.org/

UPDATE 4/17/13: The forecast for this event is 70% chance of rain. I will keep an eye on the weather and will send an email either the night before or the morning - whether or not this event will take place, or be re-scheduled.  Thanks!

UPDATE 2/3/13:  I have changed the date of this event from 3/24/13 to 4/20/13. If this change affects your plans to attend, please take a moment to update your RSVP.

It’s our third anniversary and any kind of camera can be used (DSLR, SLR, Point & Shoot, Cell Phones, Disposables, etc.)! This is a free and open event. We will meet at the 150 Eastern Parkway Entrance.

This year we’re going to try something a little different.  We'll split up in smaller groups (or venture on your own if you wish) and shoot photos in color (since it is a garden filled with beautiful colors).  But the challenge of the event – however you want to do it (with camera or post-processing) - is to take the same image and create a monochrome version of it - and put both images side by side when you post it to the album (see sample above).

The idea is to practice controlling your brightness and contrast on both images to see the similarities and differences from the two images.  Try to get as much detail as possible.  Those with macro lenses will have a bigger advantage when it comes to detail, but if you don’t have a macro lens – no worries.  Just use the best camera or lens you have.

Thanks to Brooklyn Born and Ely for this wonderful idea!!

* This is not a contest - there is no prize! This is just to get you to think about the best way to compose your photographs and capture detail.

* General Admission to the Garden on Saturdays between 10am and 12noon is FREE, except on Saturdays with public programs such as Sakura Matsuri, Chile Pepper Fiesta, and Ghouls & Gourds. Otherwise, it's $10.

* There is a cafe and several restroom areas within the garden - I called and asked the operator...

* Nearest Subways:

2/3 trainto Eastern Parkway—Brooklyn Museum station

B/Q/S trainsto Prospect Park station (The B train does not run on weekends)

4/5 trainsto Franklin Avenue

* For additional information on transit, driving directions and parking, please visit the Garden's website.

* Photography: Tripods and easels are not permitted in the Conservatory, the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, in flower beds, or blocking any Garden paths.

* Be on time!  This event starts at 11am sharp!! So give yourself plenty of time to travel.  Check for service changes or delays.  I will not wait for latecomers and I will not answer calls and messages after 11am.

* There is a limit of 100 spots and no waiting list. You may bring one guest. Please do not ask me to squeeze you in or check on the list for an open spot for you.  You can check on this event page periodically for an open spot. Please do not "crash the party".

* Please be courteous and change your RSVP accordingly.  If you RSVP “yes” and cannot or will not make it, please  change it to “no”, so that someone else who wants to go can sign up.

* Dress appropiately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

* Make sure you charge your batteries and bring your memory cards.

* Please visit the garden's website for any other additional information and policies.

* Details of this event can change at anytime.  Please check in periodically for possible updates.

I hope you will join me.  If you have any questions, send me an email or a text message before the day of the event. Please make sure you identify yourself in your message so I know who you are.

I just looked through all the images posted and WOW! I feel incredibly inspired and motivated right now. The post production work, and the macro shooters...
So amazing to see what you were all seeing:). I will post my few in the morning:).

I am not sure as to how my question about the group morphed into several defensive replies. It was not lodged as a complaint but a general question as it was my first time with the group. All I wanted to know was whether this was how most events are conducted with this group since everyone at this event was on their own. It was nothing more than a yes or no question. Second, my mention for a a quick macro tutorial was not for a workshop to be conducted as I have taken many macro shots in my lifetime but with respect to sharing some ideas as to the use of fill flash, backgrounds, suggested f-stops for appropriate depth of field and the like to improve my technique. I am sure there are many happy members. In sum, I simply posed a question as a newbie to this group.

    • Sally

Also to answer your questions: 1. No we don't usually have events in this format, and 2. Usually more of our "pros" would answer answer questions about macro photography but I guess splitting up into smaller groups didn't help. If you still have some questions about macro photography, please feel free to post them - as I'm sure our more experienced members could help out.

Great idea of sharing info Mark; this is one of many reasons I enjoy this Group. I've learned a lot from others...

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting any of you yet, but please acknowledge how great it is to form a group made up of strangers who will eventually come to know one another through common interest. When I came on to this group I typed photographers safaris and found meet up. I am presently realizing that I'm taking my hobbies and other talents for granted to work work work. Then I also, realized I didn't want to run around with a camera in my hand alone hence the meet ups. So I say mistakes occur, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding within in this group. We should let go of hurt feelings and all look at the fun you had yesterday; and the great pics you all took. I am definitely going to the next one and share in the experience together.

    All,
we appreciate any feedback, good or bad, and it is absolutely legitimate to ask questions and propose improvements as long as it is in an appropriate manner and not offensive or judgmental towards someone else. We have rules for this group and one of them is "to be nice". We are organizers who take criticism, questions, and the "happiness" of our members very seriously and don't just ignore item. Otherwise we wouldn't have responded at all.

Mark, you asked kindly and in an appropriate manner, so it was not you who escalated the conversation. Please don't worry about it. I hope each of you will give us another chance so we can show that our groups is fun to hang out with. Thank you.

Wow if people are getting testy over simple questions being asked, then something is not quite right unfortunately.

    April 28, 2013

  • Sylvia G.

Mark, this is how i had interpreted your original post - just as an 'innocent' question and i am very surprised at the response. However, just to let you know, i got excluded from another photography meetup group just for 'asking' where everyone actually was and that perhaps one could be a little bit better informed.

Well said Kathleen! I've attended many photo meet ups in the past; this is a wonderful group of people, with a lot of info to share. I look forward to each meet up with this group...

Sally and Verena, I agree 100 %. With Henry this meetup is fun, friendly and informative because of the two of you , I love it ! I did write this before but it seemed to have disappeared, my computer skills stink lol !

Verena & Sally, I couldn't attend this past meet up, but did attend the meet up in the Bronx Botanical Garden; got some great shots! This is my second year with this meet up group. You two do great work! We've had some great fun in previous meet ups and will in the future.....This is a meet up group, not a workshop.

I have read all the posts regarding this event. First, please accept my apologies - as I was under some pain from a knee injury. If I came off as "not awake" or "unfriendly", that was certainly not my intention. Usually our meetup events are more personable and we do have a lot of fun. You can ask our regulars about it.

Second, I did specify in the description that this was an "open" meetup - meaning that we would be splitting up in smaller groups, and I did mention at the initial meetup point for everyone to get to know one another. But now I see that that this was not a good idea.

Going forward, Verena and I will try our best to keep the group together and create a second meetup point to catch up and chat about what what photos we took so far, as well as sharing tips. I hope that this would help you decide to give this group a second chance.

Sure nobody asked me if i had a good time, not only could i not find anybody at the meetup.... I cant even figure out where to get the Good to see you post !!! LOL LOL. Ps missed u Will

    April 24, 2013

    • WILL

      Hi Kathleen, I missed you too. Don't worry about the "Good to see you" post, you see it was all part of the plan. The group apparently made sure that you did not find them, just so you would not need the good to see you thing. Perhaps they should rename it "Good not to see you". Lol. So there you have it :-}

First meetup for me with this group. Venue was great and I will try to post some pics. However, is this how most events are conducted with this group? Quite frankly I passed on a once a year telescope show to be with the group and since everyone was on their own, I could have done this event on my own on another weekend. A quick macro tutorial by any group experts would have been nice to have experienced.

    April 24, 2013

    • WILL

Hi Mark. It is a shame that you missed a good show just to meet a group that was not there, and I understand you being upset. In defense of the group however, this was quite atypical for them. They usually are well coordinated and the group members quite social and supportive. I am sure that as

oops... as Verena has expressed, next time should be quite different. I certainly expect as much as well. Cheers, Will.

    I had a very good time. Most of the group was dispersed when I arrived a little late, but soon after I met up with some others. I like a bit of overcast.... it makes digital photography so much easier because you tend not to clip your highlights. The sun eventually came out.... oh well :-}

    April 24, 2013

  • Sally

It was a huge overcast, very windy and cold. Not too many plants were in bloom but the cherry blossoms and tulips were beatuiful. Thank you to those who attended, and I hope you all had fun.

This sounds like a great photo shoot. I am anxious to start taking more photos now that hopefully the bad weather is past us. By the way I noticed that there were some messages from people who wanted to attend however there was a shortage of spots available. If you know you can not make it, it would be great to change your RSVP so those that would like to attend can do so.
