    Meeting Spot

Meeting Point: Small Outdoor Space right in front of the News Corporation Building, 1211 Avenue of the Americas (west side of 6th Ave between 47 and 48th Street, see picture above)

    Meetup Start: 4:30pm

Bring out some Christmas Spirit! Let’s end this year with a walk through the colorful decorated NYC. We will start the tour at the News Corporation Building on 6th Ave and make our way north towards Radio City Music Hall. After that, we will walk east, passing the huge Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center and then walking towards the department store of Saks on 5th Ave. We will continue strolling north along 5th Ave with its many department stores and beautiful decorated store windows. We will end the walk at Bergdorf Goodman, located on 5th Ave & 58th Street.

Please note that I changed the starting time for this event. We will start 4:30pm, right after the sunset.

If you want to keep shooting after the tour, if your hands are not completely frozen yet, I recommend walking west on 59th Street to Columbus Circle. They have an annual Holiday market right at the entry to Central Park and inside the atrium of the Time Warner Building (Towers) is nice Christmas display of stars with an hourly light show. The Holiday market is open until 8pm.

I’m planning about 2 hrs for the entire tour, as it definitely will be cold outside.
Please dress appropriate. There are a lot of stores and restaurants around where you can warm up or use the bathroom.

Here is a link to download a map of the area and the suggested route:

If you are interested in more Holiday Displays and store windows, please check out this website: http://news.yahoo.com/best-york-citys-2012-holiday-windows-191900662.html

    • Bring your camera, charged batteries and empty storage cards.
    • I highly recommend bringing a tripod. Please be careful with the tripod placement. Try to stay away from major pedestrian pathways. Tourists are probably looking at anything else BUT your tripod, especially when it’s dark.
    • Make sure you wear warm clothing, gloves, scarf, and a hat. This is winter!

I’m looking forward to this last walk for this year. Enjoy the holiday season. :)

Hi Molly... I live in Dyker Heights and it is pretty. I suggest you start around 12th Ave and 84th St, and walk around from there. It is very well lit to say the least and lots of fun. Each day I look out the window and consider going out to take photographs but have not yet done it. What I am thinking is that there is a magic 15 minutes when darkness is just beginning to set in, yet the houses still have some daylight on them. I would imagine that you can get some shots where the houses exhibit a tiny bit of architectural detail balanced against the Christmas lights, rather than the lights smimming in a sea of relative darkness. It is just a thought which I would like to explore... but indeed only a small window of opportunity time-wise to do this exists.
The message here... get there a little before dark sets in if possible.
Thanks for letting me vent my creative thoughts, lol.

if you start from 45/46 St, walk north along 6th ave/ Avenue of the Americas and you'll see various Christmas displays on the west side of the street. When you reach W 50th Street, you'll see Radio City Music Hall. Walk east along W 50th Street until you reach Rockefeller Plaza. There is a big Christmas tree and an ice skating rink. You won't miss it. Walk around the plaza along a smaller pedestrian walkway between W 49th & W 50th Street until you reach 5th Ave. Right across the Street is Saks 5th Ave located. You'll see people lining up in front of the store to see the decorated windows. Walk north along 5th Ave and you'll find more store windows nicely decorated, for example Bergdorf Goodman @ 58th street. This would be the end of the official tour. If you want to keep walking, I recommend going west on 59th Street towards Columbus Circle. Inside the Time Warner Towers they have an hourly light show and outside a Christmas market right in front of Central Park. Have fun with the tour. :)

I'm sorry everyone, this event is cancelled due to the weather forcast of 60% of rain for tomorrow afternoon. I don't want anyone to get sck before Christmas. I hope some of you are still going to take pictures another day. Unfortunately I'm going to have a very busy work week ahead and I'll be traveling Christmas weekend, so I won't be able to reschedule this meetup. Please feel free to meet with others and do the tour. I hope you have fun and enjoy the holiday season. :)

I'm limiting the amount of people as it will be very difficult to keep everyone together in a high populated tourist area. but I won't turn anyone down who is really interested and show up that day at the suggested time. :)

I hosted similar photowalks the last two winters. For those who are new to the group, you will really enjoy this. Be sure to prep for the weather. Happy Holidays!!

Some people did carry their regular tripods, but personally I prefer to use a mini tripod during this kind of photowalk - especially going through huge crowds. I own a strong little Manfrotto and it's the best $40 I ever spent. I use it on mailboxes, sidewalks and other odd things to get some really cool angles and long exposures. The mini tripod is available at Adorama (42 West 18th Street, between 5th & 6th Aves).

Happy Holiday and Merry Christmas. I think with that holiday greeting i have covered all the possibilities without offending anyone, I hope. Ray

Jeffrey, I attached a map with times of meetings spots. If someone gets lost, they can call me.

I just went walking around fifth Avenue and Rockefeller center with another meetup group about 30 people. Some of the people got lost. There's tons of people near fifth and Rockefeller center during this time. I can imagine the nightmare you're going to have finding people and with people getting lost with 100 people :(

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
