NYC Subway Art for Transit

UPDATED 5/23/13 (highlighted in blue)

UPDATED 5/16/13 (highlighted in red)

Please read entire details!!

Lilly B. gave us a great idea! Let’s travel around the city and shoot photos of art -- at various subway locations.

Since the forecast will be rain majority of the day, the new meetup point will be inside of Penn Station, entrance located at West 33rd Street and 8th Avenue, by the waiting room that's across from Taco Bell (see photo below). Just go down the escalator and it's straight ahead. Nearest subways are 34th & 8th (A, C, E), 34th & 7th (1, 2, 3), and 34th and 6th (B, D, F, M, N, Q, R).

We will have 3 or 4 maps with routes that will be selected randomly and we will designate leaders for smaller groups. Each group will follow the route half-way to each station noted (if possible) to take photographs.

Around 2pm we will meet at a second meetup point, located at Ann Street & William Street under scaffolding spanning across the entire street (1 block northeast of Fulton Street Stop - 2 /3 /A /C subway stop) - for lunch and bathroom breaks.  Click here to see a PDF photo of the meetup point. This would be a good chance for those who can't meet us at 11:30am and want to catch up with us.

Visit the MTA’s website to search for nearby artwork that you may be interested in:
http://www.mta.info/mta/aft/permanentart/

For those with iPhones or Androids, download the free app “Meridian” and set it up for the MTA Arts for Transit. This app will give you a list of all the artwork for each subway line:

* Please be aware that most likely tripods may be a hazard to pedestrians and you may be asked by cops or transit workers to close them up. I do not recommend anyone to bring them, but it is up to you. My suggestion is to pack light and just bring your camera and one lens. Small snacks and water may be a good idea, too.

* Be on time! This event starts at 11:30am sharp!! So, give yourself plenty of time to travel. Check for service changes or delays. I will not wait for latecomers and I will not answer calls and messages after 11:30am. If you're late, you can catch up with us at the second meetup point at 2pm.

* There is no limit and you may bring one guest.

* Please be courteous and change your RSVP accordingly. If you RSVP “yes” and cannot or will not make it, please change it to “no”.

* Dress appropriately for the weather and definitely wear comfortable shoes.

* Make sure you charge your batteries, empty memory cards and protection for your gear from the weather.

* Details of this event can change at anytime. Please check in periodically for possible updates.

I hope you will join me. If you have any questions, send me an email or a text message before the day of the event. Please make sure you identify yourself in your message so I know who you are.

Unfortunately I just realized that the flash of my DSLR is spoiled and its too short of a time to buy external one - Guess i will have to miss it this time.

    May 24, 2013

    • ElyseF

I'm coming without my flash. I'm going to up my ISO and deal with the available light. If the shots are grainy, so be it. Come with us anyway.

      1 · May 24, 2013

    • Sally

Don’t forget that you can also slow your shutter speed down a little bit while resting your camera on something, and/or open up your aperture. Try to balance all three and maybe your images won’t be so grainy.

      May 25, 2013

  • annE

my friend cant make it so i changed my RSVP, not that it will make a big diff but just because you asked us to - also i'm hoping to make it at 11:30 but it may end up being at the 2PM meeting place - Cya some time tomorrow and hopefully we wont be soaking wet

I'm thinking I would like interactive shots with the art; hands, silhouettes, etc creatively interacting with the art. For example, the R train stop at 23rd has mosaic hats at various heights that would be fun to interact with (pretend to wear or hold). If anyone wants to do shots like that, hang out with me. We can do something interesting no matter what map we get.

I may be late say by noon. Where can I join you guys?

    May 23, 2013

    • Sally

Try not to be late, as by that time we will be split into smaller groups and following subway maps underground. Keep looking out for our updates.

      May 23, 2013

Currently the forecast for this event is 54 degrees with 60% chance of rain, along with 67% humidity. This event will take place -- rain or shine!! Please stay tuned for our final updates and changes.

All, here are a few suggestions for gear for this meetup:
1- try to travel light. you probably do not need more than one lens and camera body and a flash. Think medium wide angle to short telephoto or zoom. A really fast prime lens might be a great idea as well. FYI, no one is impressed by your 4000MM zoom lens, and you will likey just struggle to get far enough away from your subject with these long zooms. 2- Flash. bring one. transit areas are pretty dark. think about bringing either a remote fralsh trigger or using the built in remote flash triggering system on your camera if you have one. Find a buddy in the group and switch off holding each other's flashes.

    2 · May 21, 2013

    • Sergio I.

4000mm zoom lens? Haha. I'm impressed by Leica equipment and by people who take amazing photos with whatever equipment!

Wow this is the most I've seen for RSVP

      May 23, 2013

  • sonja

Hi guys! Since I'm not sure if I'll make it I'm changing the RSVP. Worst scenario I'll join you last minute. Enjoy each and all location you'll visit!

    May 23, 2013

  • Sergio I.

For some reason I thought Photography in the subway system was not allowed. Does anyone know?

    May 23, 2013

    • Sally

It comes in silver too: http://www.adorama.co...

      May 23, 2013

    • Sergio I.

Thank you for the advice. I will travel as light as possible. It might be a muggy day! And humidity makes things twice as difficult.

      May 23, 2013

  • Kathleen

I changed my RSVP to no, but it's more of a maybe leaning toward no. If I do make it, I won't be able to stay for very long.

    May 22, 2013

  • Cathy R.

Last minute family function down the shore, sorry I can't join you Saturday. Can't wait to see all your photos.

    May 22, 2013

  • Sally

Currently there are over 120 RSVPs for this event. If you are on the list and you're not going, please be courteous and change your RSVP so that Verena and I have a better idea of how many people to expect. Thank you.

    is someone from Westchester coming?

    May 22, 2013

just noticed that PBS-WNET-channel 13 has a show this thursday (may 16th) at 10PM "treasures of new york - art underground" about improving the environment of the subway systems - should be interesting to know what went into making some of the art we'll be shooting

    3 · May 14, 2013

    • Christine N.

thanks Anne for this post I'm definitely watching that tonight. :-)

      May 16, 2013

    • Christine N.

Saw the show Anne and it was quite informative, I'm noticing art in subways that I frequent but didn't pay any attention to before

      May 22, 2013

  • Jill

wish I could join you, sounds like great fun... have a blast !

    May 20, 2013

    • Christine N.

We will miss you Jill, but we will have plenty of pics to post and you can enjoy. Next time :-)

      May 22, 2013

  • Greg

No lights, reflectors or tripods are allowed. Pls take note. Also take care not to block passenger flow.

    May 15, 2013

    • Greg

I spoke with a photog mentor of mine who is quite familar with photographing the subway and he told me that ancillary equipment means external equipment like speedlights (speedlites?) and that they are not permitted as they are distracting to the motorman. So as someone said the best advice is travel light and keep it simple. Check out this article for some ideas on settings in the subway, not the last word but an interesting start: http://everydayapertu...

      May 21, 2013

    • Ely

Greg, I am aware of the dictionary definition of ancillary, but in the MTA's use of the word it is very vague. As to distracting motormen/women, to the best of my knowledge the vast majority of the artwork is not really near the tracks. I will personally be bringing an external speedlight and some means of remote triggering as well as small bounce card and will take my chances with the transit officers. My thinking is I should be able to use the same setup as I used when photographing Ms. New York 2013 in Times Square out in the middle of traffic where I didnt run inot any issues, BUT I am not advising anyone to break any rules or laws :-).

      May 21, 2013

  • Verena

I agree with Ely and a lot of previous comments. Try to travel light that day and bring as little equipment as possible. We currently have over 100 ppl signed up for the event and even though we will be splitting up in groups, there will be a lot of ppl on the platforms. Thanks, Ely for the info.

    May 21, 2013

  • Sally

Currently, the forecast for this event is partly cloudy - high 67 degrees. Subway stations may be a little stuffy and subway cars may have the A/C high, so please dress appropriately and wear comfortable walking shoes.
