Our next charity project

The Mother Bear Project is dedicated to providing comfort and hope to children affected by HIV/AIDS in emerging nations, by giving them a gift of love in the form of a hand-knit or crocheted bear.

One of our fabulous members (Thanks, Roxanna!) is involved in Mother Bear Project Big Apple meetup that just started recently.  I have contacted their organizer to see if we can do some combined charity knitting events with them.  Either way, we will still work on this as our next project.

You can find out more by checking out the Mother Bear website.

I think it could be a fun project because it's very simple to knit and doesn't take much yarn. The pattern is $5.00. (Proceeds go to offset the costs of the non-profit.  If buying the pattern is an issue, please contact me, and I will get you the pattern.)  The patterns are delivered through snail mail, and the bears can be knit flat or in the round on dpns, or crocheted. They also offer bear kits.

I would be happy to have bear stuffing parties and provide the polyfil.  (Apparently, half a bag can fill four bears.)  All of the bears are sent to Mother Bear in Minnesota, then shipped to African countries  Each bear is supposed to be sent with $3.00 to cover the freight expenses to Africa.  (Once again, if this is an issue, we will cover the expenses - maybe do a fundraiser of sorts.)  Our group can cover the shipping to Minnesota.  We will ship all the bears at once.

This project will run through the summer.  It will be an easy project to carry with you and will not make your hands and lap hot in the warm months while creating it.

Please contact me with any questions or comments.  I know that a few members have already gotten started.  Once you go to the website and see those kids with the bears you will want to get started too.

PS - Allie is running the NYC Half in 2012 as an effort to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).  If you are interested in supporting her amazing effort and donating money to this fabulous cause, you can visit:
