Re: [NYC-Pints-N-Purls] donations

Our store's friend & president of the New Chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild has put in place an important way for quilters to assist in relief efforts for those in need in New York City--which we are very supportive of. Here is what she writes: “Having missed the entire storm, by being in Houston for Quilt Market, I felt helpless as my family was in NYC without me. I started to organize a quilt d...
rive for our area while I was still in Houston. Once home, I realized how seriously the storm affected my neighborhood, my friends, and fellow New Yorkers, CT, PA and NJ... Homes have been wiped off the face of the earth, people are cold, and wet, and we have rain and snow coming. I need to be able to help NOW.

I just had a call from Raul Russi, Head of the Acacia Network, whom I had previously partnered with on my BUMBLEBEANSBASICS.com Quilt Drive for homeless families being taken out of shelters and put into transitional housing. He said, "We have[masked] quilts here, right now. And since the rest of my families are INSIDE already, can we deliver these quilts in our medical trucks to the people in the Rockaways, NOW?" I said, "YES! Let's go!" WHAT WE NEED: QUILTS AND BLANKETS are needed ASAP. Home-made or Store Bought QUILTS AND BLANKETS: ANY SIZE. Quilts will be accepted, and handed out as quickly as they come in. Thank you cards will not be sent out due to the urgency of the events of SANDY.

LABEL YOUR QUILTS, Name, address and email. The person who receives your quilt may want to thank you themselves. Send Quilts & Blankets to:
Basic Housing, Inc.Attn: Robert Gonzalez / H.SANDY, 540 East 180th Street, Bronx, NY 10457 PLEASE Include INSIDE THE BOX CLEARLY WRITTEN your name, email & address & Phone. please ship them with delivery confirmation. Any questions, Please email: Lane Falcon [address removed]
THANK YOU

Do you have a contact for City Quilter?  I know another group who would like to do the same.

Thanks,
karen

I am happy to say that my building is collecting donations and that hand made blankets are now being accepted by the City Quilter if packaged properly.

I cannot make it to tonights meetup due to the storm. If you want to donate clothing, blankets etc.... I think you can still give to NYC fire stations as someone mentioned.

Thank you to Elizabeth for her donation which I gave to one of my mom's coworkers who was affected :)

I just went to the Lion blog. Lion just reopened their offices today (the store reopened yesterday. It looks like Lion isn't doing a donation drive, but they suggested that people check out Bev's Country Cottages round-up of places accepting knit/crochet items.

Did you try donating items at the Lion Brand store? I dunno if they are collecting specifically for Sandy relief now, but it's worth shooting them an email/msg and see if they are accepting.

Also, they have a discount if you buy yarn from them specifically for donation purposes, and they will give you a discount coupon as a reward once you turn things in to them.

Its sad but I have been told places are turning away hand knit & and unsealed clothing and blankets. I've just been telling them, "don't worry about bed bugs, the cold will kill them" but I don't seem to be getting the reaction I hoped for. All I can say is keep trying. If you're near me, I'm a designated drop off site the city council people trying to organize it all are accepting the hand made items my customers and I have been donating. .
Take care all

I dropped off items two days ago and they didn't say anything about sealing them so maybe it depends on the site. I was also giving to some of my friends directly who lost their homes.

I have scarves and blankets but was told that unless items are sealed and new they will not accept (especially my handknit blankets).  Are you sending to a drop off center, or are you giving to people directly?  I promise no bed bugs in any item I'm donating.

Hi I live in Staten Island near Mildand Beach and New Dorp Beach. I work in Manhattan (53rd and Lex) so if anyone wants me to bring the donations to my area let me know. Our area was hit very hard and I know they need blankets, and outerwear,

I think a Scarves for Sandy or knit cap would be great.

Thank you

NYC Fire Department is accepting donations at their houses for Staten Island. They are making a big push to assist families on Staten Island.  One of the Firefighters told us the greatest need is for children - they need every type of clothing. I've decided this is a good time for me to clean out my closets for clothing, sheets and blankets. I don't have power yet but I DO have the power to help those in need.

The NYC volunteer site lists many areas - however Staten Island is mentioned only once. (to clean up a park).

On Saturday, at the NYC Marathon Expo donations were being made for Staten Island - specifically for South Beach and one other that escapes me - Midland?? The runners were dropping all their clothing in the boxes that the Fire Dept throughout the day gathered up, loaded on to trucks bound for Staten Island that night.

If you have friends & family with growing children (kids do that constantly), ask if they would like to do a quick clean out of clothing.... & to spread the word. Drop off at your local Fire House.

How about we have a Knit Sandy Caps the Kids? or scarves & mittens. or Sandy bundles up the Kids.....

Heather
