ADOPT-A-BULL!! New York City Adoptable Pets

ADOPT - A - BULL! This group is not for those intending to breed their dogs. The NYC shelters are already filled with hundreds of pits that are euthanized daily. Over 4 million dogs are killed each year in the U.S. because they don't have homes, and a majority of them are pits and pit mixes. Please think about this statistic before going to a breeder or a pet shop to buy an animal. Almost any dog - age, color, size - can be found at the shelter at any given time. If purebred dogs is your thing, they can often be found at shelters and rescue groups too. 25% of dogs in shelters are purebred.

Powder needs a home NOW. At Brooklyn's Animal Care & Control as of 7/12, and will not be there for long, as it is a high-kill shelter. If you are thinking of adopting, go to the shelter today. Powder's Bio: "Powder is no stranger to our shelters. This 2-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier mix was adopted from us probably as a puppy and was then abandoned. It couldn't have happened to a sillier dog. That's right, "silly" like "giddy," "whacky," and "balmy." Whenever a volunteer photographer gave her a command such as "sit," Powder would sit promptly, then flop on her back, kick her legs in the air, squirm, and wait for a belly rub. When he told her to come, she came as told, flopped on her back, and so forth. Even during her photo shoot, she stared at him with one blue eye and one blue & brown eye, and dared him to take a serious picture. He couldn't. Beyond her silliness, Powder is easy to lead, friendly to people and other dogs, and a joy to have as a companion. So, if you're taking life and all its annoyances too seriously, you need Powder, and heavens know, Powder needs you now in the most desperate and silly way." Powder's ID#A661704.

Veronica needs a home NOW. At Manhattan Animal Care & Control as of 7/12 and will not be there for long, as it is a high-kill shelter. If you are thinking of adopting, go to the shelter today. Shelter staff said: "Four year old Veronica is bewildered. Her owner surrendered her on 7/5/08, explaining she was moving. She told the Shelter that Veronica loves men, women, children, other dogs AND cats! Well, her owner recently bred Veronica, as she was still lactating when she arrived. She's still trying to absorb being thrust here, among strangers. She's quiet, calm, a bit shy. Can you blame her? But she received the highest behavior rating from our vet staff and our behaviorist. We hope this gal can find a loving home, to be valued for her sweet qualities and disposition. She weighs 47 pounds." Veronica's ID#A768695

Tyson needs a home NOW. At Brooklyn's Animal Care & Control as of 7/12, and will not be there for long, as it is a high-kill shelter. If you are thinking of adopting, go to the shelter today. Tyson's Bio:
"Tyson is a champ! In all ways that make for a great dog: He?s totally sweet, fine with other dogs, gentle and calm, and great on the leash. When walked, he didn?t pull at all, just sniffed and trotted along. And when sitting with a volunteer on a bench, he just loved to be petted and stroked everywhere on his body with no issues whatsoever. He came in as a stray on 6/29/08, but this Staffordshire mix is in such good shape, someone must have owned him at some time. Mater of fact, he was tied to a pole around Atkins Street and Cozine Ave. The police thought he was tied up for too long and brought him into the shelter. The police felt he was so friendly they did not feel it was necessary to tranquilize him. Tyson weighs in at 60 pounds and will remain that weight due to his reported age of two years. He?s beautiful ? reddish shiny coat with a white freckled muzzle. If you?re looking for a strong guy who?s a complete mush, Tyson?s the one. We would love to see Tyson in an home that has experience with the breed. In addition, Tyson will need plenty of exercise and good food for him to remain the good boy he has been at the shelter. He is an exceptional dog, but his time is limited at the shelter, so please hurry!" TYSON - ID#A767829

You can also check the "Photos" or "Message Board" sections of our group's site, as we often have dogs that need fostering or permanent homes posted there. And if you still need another reason to adopt your pet rather than buy from a breeder, read this article about NYC shelter dogs from New York magazine - SHELTER SKELTER. It's an honest, hearbreaking glimpse into the shelter system in our city. The article was published in 1998, and it would be nice to think that conditions have improved since then...but there's a long way to go, until we can eradicate euthanasia and improve the quality of life for shelter animals.
