VOLUNTEER

VOLUNTEER or FOSTER: Perhaps you've been wanting to volunteer to help animals in need, but didn't know where to go, who needs the most help, or how to get started...Below is a long list of shelters and organizations that are helping animals find homes. You can go to each website and find their section labeled "Volunteering." Almost all the sites have info about volunteering, because rescue groups rely heavily on volunteers to be able to care for the animals that they've taken in. I volunteer at the Animal Care & Control at 110th St. in Manhattan because the AC&C are one of the shelters that need the most help. Unless volunteers show up, the dogs literally are not taken out of their cages and allowed to walk and stretch their legs and breathe fresh air during the day, because there is nobody there to do this. There are also two other AC&C's- one in Brooklyn, one in Staten Island- that need help. These city shelters get very little money and it shows in the dilapidated cages, no ventilation, cramped quarters, and not enough employees. Of course, anywhere you go to volunteer is going to help the animals. The AC&C may not be the right fit for you..To say it's uber depressing is an understatement. But there are a huge amount of shelters filled with dogs and cats (and even rabbits, birds and reptiles) in the NYC and surrounding areas that will be grateful for your time and compassion. And most importantly, the animals you care for will be eternally grateful for your kindness.
