________________

With the Midterm Elections looming, we're also closing in on the final two years of the Obama Administration — a twilight stage for modern two-term Presidents.

The final two years — as characterized by the punditry class as the "lame duck" period — starts the unofficial winding down of an Administration.  Many Presidential historians are quickly eager to point to the successes or failures in shaping the incumbent's Presidential legacy.

This month, we'll look back and examine the current Administration's accomplishments — or lack thereof — and debate whether the President's legacy ought to be:

• Praised as a success;

• Criticized for being marred with failures and incompetence; or

•  Lukewarmly shrugged off for being mired in mediocrity.

We'll discuss and evaluate the Administration's record with respect to the following three categories:

Topic I.  Handling of the economy, commerce, and budgetary matters

Topic II.  Domestic policies and programs

Topic III. Foreign policy and international affairs

Event Schedule
6:00 to 6:30 - Introductions, Meet and Greet
6:30 to 7:30 - Debate Topic I
7:30 to 8:30 - Debate Topic II
8:30 to 9:30 - Debate Topic III
9:30 to 10:00 - Post-Event Social

Debate Format

- Similar to the televised Presidential "townhall" debate format.
- Approximately six debate participants on each side; the remaining attendees will be part of the townhall audience. There's no mandatory requirement to participate or actively debate -- so attendees can sit back and observe.
- The townhall audience members can also ask questions directly to either debate groups.
- New debate participants will be selected for each of the three topics.

Folks, please refrain from posting the post-event partisan jabs directed at each other. I provided a forum for everyone to fully and fairly litigate their positions -- this type of post-event petty behavior is a stark departure from the group's core objective of "civility."

Please folks, no more debates on this page (see my comments above). Save your passions for the Immigration debate at the next meetup.

Okay, Steve...explain why so many Democrats including Bill Clinton had expressed concerns about Iraqi WMDs even prior to the 2nd Gulf War....Not to mention that a former senior Iraqi Air Force official Georges Sada claimed that the WMDs had been secreted out of the country prior to the U.S. invasion.... http://www.youtube.co... , http://blog.usni.org/...

I'm not having a debate on here. Thomas made it very clear that this is not the place for that. I will say but one thing. Read the intelligence committee reports on the issue before and after. They're conclusive. I don't care what
Bill Clinton says. He had no WMD. The administration knew it and intelligence agencies of three of Europe's powers said as such. A million people in Iraq are dead, 5000 US military people are dead, tens of thousands are forever scarred. All of the problems going on there right now are because of the murderous folly of the criminal syndicate that was the Cheney/Bush administration. Sada is a liar and tool for the neocons. I read actual reports from actual neutral people. That's not him.

      I'm done.

You're an engaging guy yourself...and refreshingly weird. Now, before everyone goes and gets their ire up, that's a huge compliment coming from me. I like weird. Weird is that Einstein come up with general relativity.

It was a great meet up! Tom was indeed a patient but punctual moderator. I wasn't very active as a speaker but I enjoyed very much as a listener on various topics. Anyone who is interested in meeting with our city's actual policy handlers such as Bloomberg's chief legal counsel (past 10 years and currently) or the executive officer from NYC Comptroller's office in real life to share your opinions and thoughts briefly (unless you guys are friends already) over wine and cheese and jazz this Saturday, please feel free to join my upcoming event :) They would love to hear opinions from critical thinking residents. Don't forget to bring your business card for sure ;)

Thanks to everyone for attending. Your passionate views on political matters are what makes this meetup a fun and exciting experience every time. I look forward to the next one in August.

As always, Thomas displays a patience that I find almost superhuman. It is certainly more than I am capable of.

Great discussion. A little disconcerting that someone would cite an organization that engages in climate change denial, has employed two people who beat the drumbeats to war (and knew they were lying about it....Judith Miller and Bill Kristol) and gets its money from ExxonMobil. Sad. Certain "sources" are just not credible.

I wish I could have heard what reasons Sheila would have given Obama to convince him not to run?! :D

Hi everyone, here are three final reminders for today.

    July 13

    • thomas k

      1) Some of us will be watching the World Cup final match at Lincoln Park Bar & Grill, located at 867 9th Ave (between W56th and W57th). It's located less than two blocks away from the venue. We'll be there until about 5:30, so feel free to join us there.

      July 13

      2) If you wish to stay for the post-event social hour, feel free to bring snacks and/or beverages to share with others.

      July 13

  • thomas k

I've sent a direct message to all attendees with the event details for tomorrow. If you haven't received the message, please let me know.

    July 12

  • thomas k

Hi everyone, I'll send out an email around 3pm tomorrow with the building address and other relevant information. I do it this way because the event is held at a private venue and I prefer not to post the building address here.

Also, if you cannot attend this Sunday, please be sure to update your RSVP -- this will make room for those on the wait list to attend.

    July 11

  • thomas k

Greetings to all fellow attendees! Four more days until the event and looking forward to it! Included above are additional event details, such as the event schedule and the debate format (located directly above the "Venue Information" section of the event description).

This will be my second time attending this meet up. Looking forward to hearing wonderful thinkers. I enjoyed last time very much and Tom was such a great moderator. I would also like to inform you that if any of you are interested in hearing opinions related to politics in NYC from a chief legal counsel of Bloomberg's office or a senior officer from NYC Comptroller office over jazz and wine, you are welcome to join my upcoming event at Steinway Hall, Midtown. They are going to be there to just to enjoy live jazz, wine and meet and talk to any NYC residents. Don't forget to share your personal experience with Citi bike with them ;)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
