    Hi all,

We're students who just graduated from UPenn; we're building a wearable device that tracks if you're getting drowsy and helps you stay alert, and we're now on Kickstarter! It's great for driving or monotonous tasks at work. Check it out at this link and help support us to make Vigo a reality! http://kck.st/Jz1Y75 Hope to see you all soon at one of the upcoming meetups

@Brian: Look at Vowpal Wabbit, that runs in parallel and on top of Hadoop (using a very non-standard infrastructure on top of MapReduce).

I would like to see a debate on whether Hadoop is necessary or even possible on some ML algorithms. Take Logistic Regression. The Stanford paper linked to above suggests running a matrix inversion in a reducer. With 10 MM features that becomes quite a task. Mahout uses SGD for logistic regression, which is an online algorithm that isn't really run in parallel.

Hi everyone! I work at www.operasolutions.com and we could probably host this Meetup given 6-8 weeks advance notice. Feel free to reach me at kbierce(at)operasolutions-dotcom... I look forward to meeting you all!

The Amazon web services meetup has a big space to accommodate 300 people or more (I think).. maybe you can combine with this for this meetup if you demonstrate it on their Elastic Map Reduce

Working on a highly interactive analytics app that will already use MapReduce - will one day be curious to see what kinds of data can be mined from all the user mouse activity that's been catalogued.
