Unstructured Information Processing with Apache UIMA

Presented by Dr. Pablo Duboue, five years of experience as a UIMA user at IBM TJ Watson Research Center. UIMA is an open source framework for unstructured information (e.g., text, speech). The framework enables the construction of large scale systems, with easy integration of components (Analysis Engines in UIMA) written by different vendors. In this talk, I will briefly present UIMA basics before discussing full UIMA systems I have been involved in the past (including our Expert Search system in TREC Enterprise Track 2007). I will be talking about how UIMA supported the construction of our custom NLP tools. I will also sketch the new characteristics of the UIMA Asynchronous Scaleout (UIMA AS) subproject that enable UIMA to run Analysis Engines in thousands of machines. This presentation will conclude with a town hall meeting. If you have never heard of UIMA before, please take a look at
http://incubator.apache.org/uima. Even feedback about first impressions will help enhance the discussion.

It was an interesting meeting as it gave more insight how advance the document processing can. Thanks!

Otis, some of my team is interested in past meetup videos, if you'd like you can bring a copy of the raw video and I can get one of our designer guys to make it nice and internet friendly.

Alexandre - they are still just sitting on my desktop, waiting to be clued together, shrunk, encoded, and uploaded.

Otis, where are the past meetups videos? I couldn't find them in this website.

The previous 2 meetups have been recorded, so the UIMA one should be recorded, too. I just have to learn a bit about video encoding, editing, and publishing before I can make them available.
