A Message from Gran Fondo (Bicycle Event) New York

  • May 18, 2014 · 7:00 AM

Hey Group, A Message from Gran Fondo New York....

My wife Lidia and I are the founders and organizers of Campagnolo Gran Fondo New York, a 100 mile bike race in its fourth annual edition on May 18, 2014. It attracts 5,000 racers from over 70 countries.

We're not only race organizers but also avid triathletes. Lidia has done 20 Ironmans of which 7 were in Kona with a PR of 10:22. I have done 12 Ironmans with a PR of 8:59. Each of us has competed in over 100 multisport events, everything from a sprint to long course.

GFNY is the perfect preparation for an Ironman. We are strong believers in racing one-sport events like swims, run races or granfondos to get stronger in each discipline and consequently improve our triathlon results. We and many of our friends have used granfondos to work on our bike fitness for Ironman. It's one of the few opportunities where you can work on your bike fitness over 100 miles without stopping at a single traffic light. Plus, the competition is fierce and by that you will expose yourself to a challenge that can raise you to the next level. Sign up this month to save $10 at Tri- and TT-bikes are of course welcome!

In 2014, we also have a 50-mile option, GFNY BEAR which goes from the lower level of GWB to the top of Bear Mountain, with free bus transportation back to Fort Lee. If you're training for an olympic tri or half ironman, this is the ideal event to work on your bike fitness with low stress logistics and the opportunity to push yourself to do your best.

We're looking forward to seeing many of you at NYC Bike Expo on May 16-17 for packet pickup and on the lower level of the GWB for the race start!

Is anyone doing the 100 at a calm pace (14-16 mph) and want to ride together?

Hi Maria - I plan on going at that same pace too - probably not as fast on the climbs :) shoot me a message and we can coordinate
