Sunday Afternoon Trivia - Skylight Diner at 34 St on April 21

All righty gang. Let's have a Sunday afternoon of trivia at the Skylight Diner on 34 Street & 9th Avenue, one block from the 34 Street & 8th Avenue stop on the A, C and E subway lines. Good food and breakfast 24/7. Here are the games we're playing:

TRIVAGORY - two teams go down opposite paths on a game board.

MISSING LINK - what's missing from the list? Like animal, vegetable . . .

BEAT THE EXPERTS - answer as many or more questions than the "expert." Get to the finish before the other team and beat the expert to win.

FINISH LINES - finish the familiar quote or phrase

GUESSTIMATION - where all the answers are numbers

CASH CAB - based on the TV show

My table will have the first three games. Ed's table will have the other three. Those arriving early (before 3 pm) will get a choice of where they wish to sit.

NOTE - if you take the crosstown bus heading west, take the M34, NOT the M34A bus which turns off on 8th Avenue. Also you must get a ticket from the vending machine BEFORE boarding the bus, Use your MetroCard to get the ticket.

Now here are your questions, based on people who have recently passed away:

1 Who was Roger Ebert's first cohost on his movie review show?

2 Who did Roger team up with after that person passed away?

3 What nickname was given to Margaret Thatcher, the former British Prime Minister?

4 Annette Funicello starred in several beach movies with which male teen idol?

5 Jonathan Winters played a baby on which TV sitcom?

6 Name one or two characters that Jonathan created. There's two main ones - one's a man and the other is a woman.

So sign up and try to answer the questions.

Played Finish Lines & came in second with 6 tiles & was able to answer many quotoes & was able to answer another players quotes that she didn't know at times. Then played Cash Cab & won the game with $1050 bucks making it to the second destination before others got most of the 5 & dollar questions right & got a Red Light Challenge on some state capitals right. After that played with the rest of the group, Missling Link where I was a big help to my team & Tip of the Tongue where answers were simple except one that I missed & Beat the Experts where there was some difficulty.

A nice meetup with a total of 10. At my table, Angela, Alan & Elaine won Trivagory. The "Wilma" tean beat the Fred team in Missing Link. The Wilma team were the three mentioned before plus Maggie. We played a quick game of Tip of the Tongue which was a virtual tie. Beat the Experts saw the team of the previous four people winning that as well. At Ed's table Dana won Finish Lines and Ed won Cash Cab. A nice afternoon of trivia.

By the way, the male character created by Jonathan Winters was Elwood P. Suggins. Angela got Maude Frickert, the female character.

#3 -- Margaret Thatcher had many nicknames including the most famous and the title of the movie about her "The Iron Lady." But there were a few others, and not so flattering.

  • Angela G.

    1. Gene Siskel
    2. Richard Roeper
    6. Maude Frickert. I don't know the male character.

For Ed's questions: The movie was Back to the Beach (which I actually saw in a movie theater).
The adult Mouseketeers were Jimmie Dodd & Roy. I believe the youngest Mousketeers were Cubby & Karen.

Angela got 1, 2 and 6 right. Anyone know the male character for Question 6? Ed will have to verify if his qustions are correct.

      April 13, 2013

    • Edward K.

Angela in both of my questions you are correct that the Mouseketeer Leaders were Jimmie Dodd & Roy Williams & the youngest Mouseketeers who worked as a team were Cubby O'Brein & Karen Pendleton.

Plus one more trivia question in relation to Annette Funicello & the Mickey Mouse Club. What were the names of the two adult Mouseketeer Leaders & also what are the names of the two youngest mouseketeers both a boy & a girl?

    April 13, 2013

  • Edward K.

In my dedication to Annette Funicello here is just one trivia question in memory of her. What was the name of the movie that Annette Funicello starred in, in the year 1987 before she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis?
