Fruit and Vegetable Prescriptions!
This week I want to share with you one of the most heart-warming pieces of legislation I have heard about in years - a prescription for fruits and vegetables! Several weeks ago, New York City Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs and Health Commissioner Thomas Farley announced the Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program. Doctors in and around New York City can now prescribe fruits and vegtables as a result of the implentation of an innovative new program that will give at-risk families better access to local produce.

More than 140 NYC farmers' markets are now accepting "Health Bucks," which have been prescribed to obese and overweight patients and their families. The program gives patients $1 in Health Bucks each day for each member of their family over a period of four months. That comes to about $120 in fruits and vegetables every month!

The Natural News reports that the federal "food stamp" (SNAP) feeds more than 100 million Americans. These are the same Americans who at the highest risk for preventables diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, cancer, and heart disease. They are called preventable because the numbers affected can be drastically reduced by lifestyle changes. While the SNAP program allows monies to be spent on all of the processed and refined foods that are increasingly associated with preventable diseases, which are undermining our personal health, driving up our national health care costs, and draining our national economy, the Vegetable and Fruit Prescription Program is helping guide individuals towards healthy food choices and a healthier eating lifestyle.

According to Dr. Shefali Khanna, with Lincoln Medical Center, "We're not only teaching them just about eating healthy this is really an investment for the future. And we hope we have a whole generation of kids who benefit from this, and reaches adulthood at a healthy optimal weight."

It's not often we see officials taking a progressive step towards natural health and away from our overdependence on Big Pharma. However, it is now happening in what is not only the largest city in the nation, but a global leader. We take our hats off to New York for taking this truly momentous stand for promoting natural health and true wellness.

Here's hoping they are only the first in many more to come.

Enjoy your Healthiest Way of Eating this week,

George
