NYC Web Tech Scaling Meetup #1

We'll be having our first meetup May 1st at 6:30 PM at Pivotal Labs. The current format is to do a bit of networking beforehand, have a guest speaker (possibly two), and then go over scaling issues people have been having in order to get feedback from the group.

For the first meetup, we're going to have Mike Lewis talk about scaling at Fondu (

Since this will be the first Scaling Meetup I'd also like to go over why I started it and gather ideas on making it more useful

I look forward to meeting everyone!

I liked the openness of the discussion, but it felt unfocused. Perhaps pick 1 topic within scaling to focus on for each meetup - caching, queueing, identifying hot spots, scaling with NoSQL, scaling with traditional RDMS, etc. I think it's good to keep the presentations language agnostic. Having the speaker prepare slides for 1 or 2 real-world scaling challenges that they dealt with would be a good compliment and make the concepts more tangible.

Lastly, have a clear start and end to the meetup, and encourage people with highly specific questions to chat after the meetup ends.

Those are all the bad things, and they're really not that bad. All in all a good first meetup.

Learned a lot about the scaling issues startups face. As a front-end guy I didn't understand everything but it was still very interesting.

Meetup has allowed me to meet people I wouldn't have met naturally - they're totally different than me.
