Welcome Weed Eaters. My name's Daniel and I'm the group facilitator.
This group was started to promote a greater appreciation for wild plants. And there's no better way to show love, devotion and trust than by sharing a meal together.
This is a collaborative endeavor. Much of what I know about plants and nearly all the edible and useful stuff, I learned directly from other people (the oral tradition) and through experimentation. I learn by listening, reading, trying and sharing.
I'm a professional botanist with two decades experience studying the plants of North America, as well as far flung places like Belize, Hawaii, Georgia (not the peach state) and Vietnam. I observe how people use wild plants everywhere I go. On these outings, I'll share this knowledge with you.
Through hands-on instruction in plant identification, classification and use, participants will learn the characters that distinguish common plant groups, differences among species and past and present uses ranging from shelter, medicine, fiber, food and ritual.
Every Thursday I publish a column on another of our beautiful and bountiful wild plants. See: http://www.nybg.org/plant-talk/
