The subject of this year's theme for International Day of Democracy -- Strengthening Voices for Democracy — aims to shine a spotlight on the importance of people's voices. Dr. Wang Bingzhang is widely regarded as the founding father of the Chinese pro-democracy movement abroad and was one of its prominent voices for over 20 years before being kidnapped and imprisoned. He was the founder of China Spring, the first Chinese magazine in the U.S. devoted to China's freedom, and the founder and co-founder of several democratic parties/organizations. As Dr. Wang’s voice is currently stifled, it is appropriate that in celebration of the theme of this day activists and his family members call for his release, and for democracy and human rights for all in China. It is the first time that a major dissident organization is holding such a significant event to highlight the importance of the September 15th “International Day of Democracy.”
Dr. Wang has been in the custody of the Chinese government since July 3, 2002. He was tried secretly on January 22, 2003 in less than a day, and was sentenced on February 10, 2003 to life imprisonment in solitary confinement. His sentence is the harshest levied on a political prisoner since 1989. 0fficial statements by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detentions have declared his detention a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The United States and Canadian governments have also called for his release. Despite these efforts, Dr. Wang continues to languish in prison, now for 11 years, where he has developed several serious medical conditions that make his family fearful for his life. He suffers from phlebitis, severe hay fever, gastritis, varicose veins (no comma) and depression. He has also had three major strokes.
Dr. Wang’s long sentence in solitary confinement amounts to torture, and the rally participants will request an urgent investigation and immediate intervention on behalf of his situation. Dr. Wang is a U.S. resident and his family members are citizens of Canada and the United States.

The Democratic Party of China (DPC) was assembled in 1998 by democracy activists and former student leaders from the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. In the same year, when the group tried to register itself in China as a political opposition party, the registration was declined. Since 1998, over 300 of members and founders of the party have been jailed, and a much greater number are closely monitored and harassed by the police. The basic principles of the DPC are: prosperity, fairness, democracy, freedom, rule-of-law, and human rights. The Party’s US headquarters are in Flushing, New York.
