I guess I should introduce myself. Have you seen “Shit Girls Say”? I’m just going to assume so, and start off with “Did I lock the door?...Yes!” except I’m more of a when I’m halfway down the block, “Where’s my phone? OH MY GOD, where IS my phone?” Then I crouch frantically on the sidewalk and pull every little thing out of my bag, usually about fifteen pens, a few highlighters, some grubby looking lip gloss, an inhaler, and finally a book- nowadays I’m on a weird Agatha Christie kick…but I digress, and when I finally find said phone, I laugh hysterically, muttering, thankyouthankyouthankyou, and clutch it feverishly in my hand until I put it down and forget where again a few minutes later. People do look at me like I’m crazy.
So, my name is Malli. When I saw that this group, NYC book and pub-crawl, needed a new organizer, I thought, why the hell not? Never mind, that I lose my phone every five minutes. I happen to love books, and by the way, I happen to hate Miss Marple so reading Nemesis was a complete act of masochism on my part. I love books, and I love a good drink, and I more than love the two together with a group of like-minded people.
I wanted to start off with an idea that seemed good in the shower, and hopefully will seem good to all of you. Has everyone heard of a White Elephant Christmas party? Well instead of awkward gifts like half a pack of smashed cigarettes and a condom from your dirty uncle, or like my last white elephant when I was six and in the girl scouts, a glass paperweight with a demented unicorn on it that will give you nightmares, I was hoping all of us could each bring one book, it can be a terrible book, so long as you love it. Any book, it doesn’t have to be new, or clever, or pretentious like pretending you loved The Old Man and the Sea and love to discourse on Rimbaud and draw parallels between him and Jim Morrison every Tuesday night. I am going to bring A Spell for Chameleon. It’s fantasy- judge all you want. That’s the point, let’s just all bring what we love to read and trade, claim, barter, force these books upon each other, and then go from there. This will be hilarious of course, because it will be at an awesome location with awesome cocktails. This will be a sort of getting to know our group, then our second event, which will be a full on literary pub-crawl. I promise amazing things.
May 23rd, 2012, Wednesday, Hump day, more details such as time and place to follow. Please RSVP & let me know how many of you would actually be interested, and I will send out further information.
Thank you, and I look forward to meeting all of you very soon.
