Lucky Jim is a (dark-ish) comic novel written by Kingsley Amis, first published in 1954. It was his first published novel, and won the Somerset Maugham Award for fiction. Set sometime around 1950, Lucky Jim follows the exploits of the eponymous James Dixon, a reluctant Medieval history lecturer at a provincial English university (inspired in part by the University of Leicester).

This acid (and relatively SHORT) satire of postwar British academic life is today still a rewarding read. And there's no denying how big an impact it had back then-- Lucky Jim could be considered the first shot in the Oxbridge salvo that brought us Beyond the Fringe, That Was the Week That Was, and so much more.

According to Amazon.com, be warned that the book is not politically correct (Amis wasn't either), but take it for what it is, and you won't be disappointed.

Time magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005

NOTE: I WILL BE EMAILING MEMBERS ASKING YOU TO CONFIRM YOUR "YES" RSVP THE WEEK BEFORE THE MEETUP, NO LATER THAN THE FRIDAY BEFORE SO WE CAN GET A PRETTY ACCURATE HEADCOUNT. PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHANGE A "YES" RSVP TO A "NO" IF YOUR PLANS CHANGE, SO MEMBERS ON THE WAITING LIST HAVE A CHANCE TO READ THE BOOK. AND REMEMBER TO SEE THE "ABOUT US" PAGE FOR THE NO-SHOW POLICY, IT'S STRICTLY ENFORCED. THANKS!

ALSO NOTE - IF WE HAVE A WAITING LIST AGAIN THIS MONTH, PEOPLE WITH "YES" RSVPS WHO HAVE NO-SHOWED IN THE PAST, MAY BE MOVED ONTO THE WAITING LIST IN FAVOR OF ALLOWING REPEAT MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING TO HAVE A SPOT. YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE CHANGE SHOULD THIS APPLY TO YOU.
