Not much hacking, but eventful and thoughtful conversation is just as good :)

I think that depends on your table and company. My little group crushed quite a hotbot code while discussing best practices and testing. So nyah. :)
I'm looking forward to making progress on the Nokogiri backlog of pull requests and bug reports tonight. Hackfest!
Hi! I'm new to NYC and would love to get involved with the Ruby community here. So, what exactly happens at one of these hackfests?

Just folks sitting around programming, collaborating, socializing, etc while eating pizza. It's casual and not at all a nose to the grindstone sort of gathering.

Help support your Meetup
Founded in 2004, NYC.rb is the place for experienced Ruby and Rails programmers in New York City.
We meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. Second Tuesdays are for one or more talks, and fourth Tuesdays are just hackfests, where people bring their laptops and hang out.
Job postings are allowed on the mailing list if they meet the following requirements:
* You must identify the company by name. * You must put [JOB] in the subject to help others filter out these messages. * The job must be Ruby-related, and in the NYC metro area.
You cannot directly contact other list members about jobs unless they've contacted you first--violators of this rule may be banned and/or publicly shamed.
If you have any questions or concerns about these rules, please feel free to contact the Meetup organizers.

Meetup has allowed me to meet people I wouldn't have met naturally - they're totally different than me.
