Hi David,

Since someone already gave a shout-out to RubyMonk, I'd just like to amend that with a request for feedback. We're currently working on higher-level books for RubyMonk subscribers (Metaprogramming as a first topic) but we'd like to enhance the Ruby Primer as well, which currently comprises all of the site's free content.

If your friend does go through RubyMonk, please encourage her to write to us. We'd love to hear what she's interested in learning next, once she's comfortable with Ruby basics.

Best of luck to your friend!

Steven Deobald

TryRuby.org and rubymonk.com are both good resources to get up to speed on ruby.
If she's a mechanical engineer does she have experience coding in a different language? If so it might be worth it to learn the web framework in that language.

Have a friend who has a degree in mechanical engineering but with the economic downturn hasn't found a good job. She is considering a move into the software development world - with all of the discussions about getting women involved in the rails community, any suggestions to get her started?  I sent her links to the standard web sites (railstutorial.org, railsforzombies, etc..) but I haven't dealt with learning rails or helping a new rails developer for a while.

Thanks,
David
