Thanks James, that's very kind of you, much appreciated.

As always, an ideas / thoughts / features on how I could improve, I'd love to use that feedback to learn and make it better.

Best wishes,

Steve

I run rubynow.com (one of the oldest ruby jobs boards - if not the oldest). If you're a junior developer and want to send me your information (in confidence) I'd be more than happy to try and find mentorship opportunities for you. Just send a 'hello email' to [address removed]. If there's interest, and it would help out, I could throw up a feature to try and connect those seeking mentorship directly on the site. Feedback and thoughts very welcome, Steve

To everyone who has contacted me regarding a junior development position, I'm sorry if I haven't responded to you yet.  I'm not ignoring you; I've simply been inundated by people interested in mentorship, and responding to everyone would be a full time job at the moment.  Please don't mistake my lack of response for disinterest or judgement.

Hello fellow Rubyists,

I know many of you are looking for Ruby developers, and based on various conversations I know many of you are having difficulty.  In particular, I know some startups are having trouble with the cost of hiring senior developers, when they can be found.

I've heard this from enough people that I've decided to start a new company, Groundwork, as an effort to improve the situation.  In short, we provide development work very much in the Pivotal style (I worked there for six years), but at a significantly reduced rate.  The way we make this work is by pairing very experienced developers with new developers, who bill at a much lower rate (and are never left to flail on their own).  Our clients get the benefit of proven experience; our junior developers get the benefit of a solid learning experience; no one has to pay through the nose.  Over time our junior developers will "graduate" into the job market (or directly to clients), increasing the number of available hires with a decent experience base.

I'm writing this email to three separate audiences:

First, anyone in need of development work, but who can't afford premium contracting rates.  If this is you, please feel free to contact me ([address removed]) and I'll happily talk with you about what we can offer.

Second, any thoroughly experienced developers with the capacity and desire to not only do exceptional work, but also to simultaneously mentor junior developers through the process.  Most really outstanding developers I know are great communicators, so this may not be as much of a stretch as many might imagine.  If this is you, also please feel free to contact me ([address removed]) and tell me how fantastic you are.

Finally, junior developers.  As it happens, we have received a LOT of interest in mentorship, and our ability to take junior developers is limited by our ability to pair them with experienced developers who can make them productive, so we will likely not have junior positions immediately available.  That said, we're planning to keep a waiting list, and hope to bring in new junior developers as quickly as we can.

For those of you who don't know me, or don't know of me, I've worked for lots of companies, small and large.  At Pivotal Labs I built the mobile development practice and trained the technical leaders of some companies you've likely heard of.  I left Pivotal for a CTO position, and am now returning to a consulting role to focus on teaching and mentoring.  If necessary, I can provide references willing to testify to the quality of my work.
