Lower Hudson to Brooklyn Heights: Beauty by the rivers

I think the parks and promenade along the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan create the most varied, interesting, and beautiful environment in the city. In addition to the striking river vistas, we'll see a treasure trove of outdoor art, monuments, memorials, and unusual parks. Then we'll loop around the tip of Manhattan for dinner (buy it or  brng your own) on an elevated patio behind the South Street Seaport, overlooking the East River. Next we'll cross the Brooklyn Bridge (hopefully at sunset) and then tour Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING DETAILS SO YOU'RE PROPERLY PREPARED.

DISTANCE: About 6 miles.

PACE: MODERATE, NOT SLOW. If you want to stroll slowly rather walk moderately, this is not the right hike for you!

FINISH AT: Around 9:30 PM. But you can leave earlier, of course.

COST: Whatever you pay for dinner at the Seaport's fast-food outlets (unless you bring your own); and $1 for me, in part to cover Meetup’s organizer fee.

TRANSPORTATION: Consult hopstop.com, but also check this link for subway and bus changes: http://travel.mtanyct.info/serviceadvisory.

WAITING LIST AND GROUP SIZE: Be patient if you're on the waiting list. It usually melts away as people cancel, especially in the last day or two. And don't be scared by the 80-person limit: We usually end up with only about 35 to 50 people, because of cancellations and no-shows.

This was a most enjoyable walk from Manhattan to Brooklyn beginning in late afternoon into the evening with a wonderful friendly group of people. As always very well thought out and led by Ron who pointed out interesting hidden nooks and crannies along the way.

Hi Ron, can you give us the latest update. Are we still going? Need to know. Urgent!

    June 29, 2013

    • Ron

At noon there's a 20-30% chance of rain later today. i won't cancel unless it reaches 40%. bring an umbrella just in case.

      June 29, 2013

  • marlene V.

Hi Ron, will you be sending an update later on the day? I will be watching for your news. Thank you.

    June 29, 2013

  • Louisa

I was really looking forward to this but it looks like the rain is inevitable and Im still on the waiting list anyway, so I'll just say no for now.

  • Atwood

The weather forecast right now is for thunderstoms throughout Saturday. Do you intend to postpone your walk if that really happens? I don't want to be walking in open spaces during T-storms.

    June 28, 2013

    • Ron

Atwood, there's currently (11 PM Friday) a 20% to 30% chance of rain during the walk. I won't cancel unless it reaches 40%. Bring an umbrella or, if you're worried about being hit by lightning, don't come this time.

      June 28, 2013

    • Atwood

Thanks for update. I am still plannng to go.

If we are on the waiting list, do we still swing by or will we be notified beforehand to come or not?

    June 27, 2013

    • Ron

you will be notified. Be patient; many people cancel at the last minute. we've had as many as 60 people on the wait list in the past, and everyone either canceled or was moved up to the yes list by the time the walk started. but please come only if you receive the confirmation by email or see that you're on the yes list on this web page, which will happen a little faster than the email.

This is the type of thing I love to do. First time doing something with this group. What is the policy if it rains?

    June 26, 2013

    • Ron

I'll cancel if there's more than a 30%v chance of rain. I usually wait until the night before or, if it's iffy, a few hours before the walk.

I have no clue how to find my way around Bklyn. Financial district ez b/c I just go west on Houston, then turn left on Bdway to Chambers. I'm very unfamiliar with the subways. How many miles/how much time will u be in Manhttn? Could I just do that?

  • Carol

Hi. I'd love to join you. I'd be driving in from NJ and would like to park at the finish point and take transit to the start point. Do you have an address for the finish point that I can use to find the closest parking? Thanks. -Carol

    June 25, 2013

    • Ron

Park near the 2, 3 train at Borough Hall, Brooklyn, at the corner of Court St. and Montague St. Then take the 2,3 to Chambers St; the Starbucks is nearby.

      June 25, 2013

  • Barbara

Are starting point and ending point extremely close, Ron? I'm drivining into Manhattan from LI and I was planning on parking right by the Chambers St/W Broadway Starbucks. Please let me know. Thx.

    June 25, 2013

    • Ron

No, but you can take a short subway ride from brooklyn heights back to starbucks.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
