Whitney Museum, Asia Society, & optional Burmese dinner!

  • February 21, 2014 · 6:00 PM
  • Whitney Museum lobby, far-right side (opposite end from coat check)

We'll visit at least two exhibitions at the Whitney (pay what you wish): "American Legends from Calder to O'Keefe," and "Edward Steichen in the 1920s and 1930s." (Steichen was probably the greatest photographer ever.) Then we'll walk to the nearby Asia Society (free) to see these exhibits: "Tales of Wonder," ancient artwork about the fantastic legends of India; "Golden Visions of Densatil," eight glittering, multi-tiered structures elaborately decorated with Buddhist imagery; and "Transgressions," a modern Indian artist's multimedia installation--a mesmerizing projection of colors and shadows. As an added treat, we'll watch Buddhist monks meticulously create a giant mandala using colored sand--which will be discarded after they're done. (Live in the moment!)Around 9 PM, we'll go for an optional dinner at a nearby Burmese restaurant. We'll eat family style (no exceptions), sharing the dishes and the cost (see menu below).

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING  DETAILS SO YOU'RE PROPERLY PREPARED:

COST: Pay what you wish at the Whitney and free at the Asia Society. Please add $1 for me, in part to cover Meetup's organizer fee. The family-style dinner will probably cost about $23 per person, including tax and tip.

OPTIONAL DINNER: We will share the dishes listed below. TO SIMPLIFY THE BILL, THERE WILL BE NO SEPARATE ORDERING AND NO DRINKS (EXCEPT TEA AND WATER, OF COURSE.

Spring Ginger Salad

Mingala Noodles with in Shan red Sauce

Country Chicken with vegetables in peanut chili sauce

Prawns with Eggplant in tamarind sauce.

Thousand-layer Pancake stuffed with ground beef & potato in curry sauce.

TRANSPORTATION: Go to hopstop.com, tripplanner.mta.info, or both (since they're occasionally inaccurate).

WAITING LIST: Please be patient. If you're in the top 25 on the list (shown below the main list on the right side of this page) you can come. The waiting list almost always melts away by the time of the walk, since many people cancel, especially in the last few hours.

RSVPs: No need to let me know if you can't make it. But please change your RSVP!

Thanks Ron. I still say that Streichen’s photograph is much more striking with contrast.

You're such a lovably stubborn guy!

Higher contrast prints were for publication use. More tonal prints were Streichen's works for fine art. The beauty of Gelatin silver prints were known for the tonal quality not for contrast.

Nice evening. I especially enjoyed the "American Legends" show at the Whitney. They may have been legends, but I was totally unfamiliar with most of them -- and wow, so much wonderful art that I had never seen before. Thanks, Ron, and good to see everyone.

The N, Q, R trains seem delayed going into Manhattan because of earlier signal problems....This may affect a number of people. I took an earlier train because of it, but am also stuck in Astoria still.

Yes notification (wait list) unfortunately comes too late for me to change plans.

I just heard that due to the extremely high winds in this area, the LIRR tracks of my line are covered with wires, debris, etc and they've curtailed most of the sched for the rest of day/evening. I don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere nor wait on the platform hoping that a train will come. I'm so disappointed! :( Have fun. I'll def catch u next time.

Nothing sounds better,. A beautiful program. However, may I join you only for dinner? I have a previous engagement in the city. It's a shame I can't make the Asia Society etc. You are a great organizer! Thanks

I need to limit the number of people at the dinner by sticking with the RSVP limits. But remember: the top 25 on the waiting list (shown on this page) at any time before the walk starts can come.

Was sorry to have to change my RSVP to no, but my very happy alternative is to see Middle of the Night by the extraordinary Paddy Chayefsky. Will definitely want to get to the Whitney, etc. at another time. If anyone wants to do it again, or also can't attend Friday night but would like to meet to do it together, get in touch. Have fun! Is it possible to catch up with the group at The Asia Society? What time do you think you might get there? Or the Burmese Dinner? Is it Cafe Mingala? Thanks!
