Upper East Side galleries, mansions, park, & more

PLEASE NOTE NEW MEETING PLACE, ABOVE

Let's explore the Upper East Side, featuring some of the swankiest art galleries in town and many other great attractions: a free museum of ancient civilization, currently showing Masters of Fire: Copper Age Art (up to 6,500 years old); a shop featuring autographed letters and photos of famous people, some centuries old; a clothing store decorated like an elegant old mansion; some magnificent real mansions plus an iconic hotel; and a huge, beautiful temple. We'll have lunch in Central Park (forecast: 50 degrees!)

PLEASE READ THE DETAILS BELOW, SO YOU'RE PROPERLY PREPARED:

DISTANCE: About 2 miles.

PACE: Moderate, NOT SLOW.

LUNCH: Bring your own--we'll eat in the park if the warm forecast holds up; otherwise we'll head for an indoor location.

COST: $1, in part to cover Meetup's organizer fee.

ENDING TIME: Around 5 PM, but you can leave earlier, of course.

TRANSPORTATION: The closest subway stop is the 4,5,6 train at 86th St. and Lexington. Consult tripplanner.mta.org,  hopstop.com, or both, since each is occasionally inaccurate.

WAITING LIST: Be patient. If you're in the top 25 on the list (shown below the main list on the right side of this page) at any time before the walk starts you can definitely come. Don't worry about huge crowds: No matter how many sign up, we've never had more than about 50 people, usually fewer.

Enjoyed going to a number of art galleries, but was really excited about the NYU museum. Can't wait for the next exploration.

During this trip I met several people who told me that there's a meetup group hosted by Hank who gives very good NYC discovery trips. I couldn't find the group. Can someone help and give me the group's name? Thanks in advance.

What a spectular day of unending surprises. I loved the Rendell gallery, the Audubon exhibit and of course, the mini-concert by the birds. Thanks for another great adventure, Ron.

Great afternoon! Lots of interesting places. The first one, especially, with the 6,000 year old pottery was amazing. It was also interesting to go into Temple Emanuel-El, which I had passed on the street a zillion times but never went inside. Nice to sit at a table in the sun for lunch.

I was more interested in the galleries at The Fuller Building. I am disappointed that the thrust of this MeetUp was changed.

We visited the midtown galleries earlier this winter. I'm glad I found enough interesting places uptown that we could avoid repeating the ones in midtown.

Sounds great, I'm on the bottom of the wait list. Hope I get to come.

As the walk description says, the top 25 on the waiting list at any time can attend. There's a very good chance that there will be enough cancellations before the walk starts--especially at the last minute--to move you up from 50 to 25 or less.

I'ld like to bring along a friend. Hope there is space.

Please change your RSVP to add one guest. That's the only way to determine if there's room.

    Can teenage children come along.

    March 4, 2014

    • Ron

Yes. If you sign up, please add one person as your guest. (One is the limit.)
