I'VE CHANGED THIS MEETUP FROM CLOISTERS TO SNUG HARBOR, BECAUSE THE A TRAIN IS NOT RUNNING TO THE NEARBY STATION THIS WEEKEND. PLEASE CHANGE YOUR RSVP IF YOU NO LONGER WISH TO ATTEND.
Let’s take the free Staten Island ferry, then walk to the sprawling grounds of Snug Harbor Cultural Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Museum. The Center includes:
* Spectacular, authentic Chinese scholar’s garden
* Eight other lovely outdoor or indoor gardens
* Wetlands nature path plus an ornamental pond
* Many beautiful old buildings
We’ll take a roughly one-hour walk, partly along the water, from the ferry to the Center; you’ll have the option to walk or take the bus back to the ferry.
Don't be late: The ferry leaves at noon!
DISTANCE: About five miles.
PACE: MODERATE (2-2.5 MPH), NOT SLOW, EXCEPT IN THE GARDENS. IF YOU WANT TO STROLL RATHER THAN WALK MODERATELY, THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT HIKE FOR YOU.
FINISH AT: 6:30 PM at the Manhattan ferry terminal, but you can leave earlier, of course, by walking or taking the bus back to the ferry.
LUNCH: Around 2:30 PM. BRING YOUR OWN OR BUY A SANDWICH AT THE WHITEHALL (MANHATTAN) FERRY TERMINAL.
COST: $8 for the Center, plus $1 for me, in part to cover Meetup’s organizer fee.
TRANSPORTATION: Consult hopstop.com, tripplanner.mta.info, or both, since each is occasionally inaccurate.
WAITING LIST: Be patient. If you're in the top 20 on the list (shown below the main list on the right side of this page) at any time before the walk starts you can come.
