Beauty in Midtown Part III--without the crowds!

Let's get one last taste of the holidays by visiting spectacular displays that are still standing after the new year. In addition, we'll visit the New York Public Library, with exhibitions about the history of lunch in NYC, Charles Dickens, and some great photography; Scandinavia House, with paintings of the Icelandic sagas; the skinniest building in the city; the wizard of Park Avenue; a huge gallery of antiques; and several beautiful churches. Along the way we'll spot many remnants of the city's golden age of architecture, still glowing amidst the steel-and-glass towers.

PLEASE READ THE DETAILS BELOW, SO YOU'RE PROPERLY PREPARED:

DISTANCE: About 2 miles

PACE: Moderate, NOT SLOW. If you want a leisurely stroll between the attractions rather than a moderate walk, this event is not for you!

LUNCH: Bring your own. We'll eat inside an atrium, starting around 2 PM.

COST: $1, in part to cover Meetup's organizer fee.

ENDING TIME: Around 5 PM, but you can leave earlier, of course.

PLEASE DO NOT RSVP "NO" UNLESS YOU'RE CHANGING YOUR STATUS FROM A PREVIOUS "YES."

The instructions said west side of 6th ave. The grace building is across the street from the atrium, on the east side. Sorry you couldn't find us.

Have been busy with other issues this morning and just found out about this opening. I will never be able to make it by noon but will try to catch up by lunch or before if I can find you.

I just received a notice that a spot has opened, but it is too late for me to get there, and I do not want to risk finding you along the route. So I'll have to pass.

  • Sharon

Oh... I really hope there will be another walk in midtown with the same routes... So many people are waiting!

    January 4, 2013

    • Ron

Thanks for your interest, Sharon. Several places we're visiting will close very soon, so I don't think I'll be doing this walk again until next winter.

The map is giving directions in queens? This is still taking place in Manhattan correct?

    January 4, 2013

    • Ron

Correct. Those maps are frequently bizarre; I have no control over them.

Ron...I intended to sign up for this, but may have forgotten. I am puzzled because I do not appear on the Attending, Waiting, or All lists. But I appear here where I am typing this.

    January 4, 2013

    • Joe C.

I got on the wait list, but the reason I was puzzled is because I did not appear on ANY of the lists, esp. that I was not even on the NOT ATTENDING. ..as if I did not exist. Shouldn't I have at least been included on that list?

      January 4, 2013

    • Ron

no, "not attending" is only for those who specifically said they're not coming.

Is it necessary to bring lunch? Is there food on sale in or near the atrium?

    January 4, 2013

    • Ron

The atrium is on E. 51st near 5th ave., so yes there proboably are food stores nearby. Lunch will be only about 25 minutes though, so time will be tight if you buy rather than bring.
