It looks like the zip files that contained the GDB files now also contain shapefiles.

Philip,

Greetings!

We are happy to inform you that the Geo datasets (that were in GDB format) from Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications agency, now additionally includes SHP format files in the zip file.

When you visit NYC DataMine<http://www.nyc.gov/html/datamine/html/data/geographic.shtml>, please refresh (CTRL + F5) to make sure you download the updated dataset.

Regards,
NYC DataMine Support

Thanks for making that clear Dave and I really appreciate you offering to help access and convert these files. It sounds like the long term solution is for the city to provide these as an open format and it sounds like the city will be doing that using another format before ESRI makes Geodatabase open (though it looks like next year might be better).

Also, happy http://gisday.com!

I represent ESRI in NYC, the creator of the Geodatabase format. I'm unclear where this confusion is coming from, but let me try to clarify. The Geodatabase is a high performance data format designed to flexibly model spatial data. It excels in high quality data management, including data integrity constraints, domains, topology, linear referencing, versioning, image management and networks. Another strength is domain-specific model definitions and support of advanced spatial analysis. If you are interested in learning more, please visit http://resources.esri.com.
Having said that, ESRI is in NO WAY associated with NYC Data Mine, NYC Big Apps, or any decision making regarding what data formats were provided. So this not a private venture intruding on a government service. I cannot speak for the city government and their choice of data format delivery.
However, I do appreciate everyone's interest in working with this data without having to purchase ESRI software. In light of that, I can make available a limited number of free evaluation software installations. This would allow you to open the Geodatabases and export them as shapefiles, KML, DXF, etc. As I said, I only have a limited number of installations. I believe you can also request an evaluation license from our website.
Thank you,
Dave LaShell

Isn't the data supposed to come from the government?  Has this single private venture been given full rights over supposedly opened governemnt data?

I'm not too familiar with the whole.  I joined the group because I thought that in the future, if government gathered was being made freely available, I would probably think of a project to use it.

I would like to come to understand this better if possible.
