Tour Lakehurst UAV Facility

apologies for the last minute posting. This opportunity was presented to me and I wanted to share it with you. I consult with a local college on their UAV program and we've gotten an invitation to tour the Lakehurst NJ Naval Air facility.

This facility was recently awarded to be a test site for civilian UAS use in partnership with VA Tech, Drexel, and Rutgers. All 4 facilities presented proposals naming the other 3 as partners so if any of the 4 won, they would all win.

This is the location where the Hindenburg disaster took place and has been a long time home for lighter-than-air aircraft. We'll get a look at some full size Helo UAV's and get a briefing by one of the UAV team specialists.
We're limited to a small group of 15-20 but there may be some slots open. Its on a first come-first served basis with college students and faculty taking precedence. Those of us in Northern NJ will likely be carpooling. Along with indicating your interest here on this page, please send me an email so I have easier reference of those attending and a head count

You must provide valid and current photo ID, and if you are driving you must also show proof of current insurance and registration along with your driver's license.

Much more going on in the coming months!!

As the organizer, I'm biased - but this was fascinating to me in many ways. Glad to have experienced it.
Met with UAV civilian engineers of 2 generations. They described their roles and how they came about performing them. We toured the Radio Engineering Hangar where any device used in any form of communication or radio frequency operation is tested and approved to go out in the field. Saw a brand new Blackhawk Helo side by side with one from 1986. Analog vs Digital - scale of the bldgs and the site were immense and difficult to grasp.

Got to see the hangar the Hindenburg was stored in and the field that it crashed on. Looks pretty much the same. The hangar now houses a 1/3 scale aircraft carrier deck and catapult launch system. We had a look at the engineering behind it down below deck and learned about the military testing of magnetic technology as a more adjustable and rampable means of launch.

Those that attended - please post photos!

Hope to see you all very soon.

    Hi,
In order to keep the list organized and accurate and so I can send you messages outside of meetup, please send me an email so I can track who would like to attend. I will send confirmation on Monday as to how many will be able to attend from NYCDUG once I have students commitment. Looks like we have some offers of carpooling from NYC area already!
