I fly her at Ferry Point Bronx next to White Stone Bridge i have no problems there planes fly there even the parks department van was helping this guy plane stuck in the tree . Here is the map http://log.xaircraft.com/#2014_03_24_[masked]_[masked] and here some footage i was testing some props.https://vimeo.com/89915918

I've flown at Ferry Point. Not a good place, not enough room and surrounded with water. Bridge is close-by and LaGuardia across the ways. Matter of time before they ban that area.

It's been there since before i started, Model planes fly there plenty of room in the middle you can fpv around trees have a spotter to look out for people walking, bridge just don't get close to it planes don't fly above 400 ft i usually i only fly up to 200 or less. I go almost every day people that are there walking are nice and say hello to me ask question about my quad but it up to the coordinator and only my suggestion. can have a picnic barbecue too!Only thing is no subway so i volunteer to pick some people from subway station who don't have cars .

Sorry I missed the event, the broken knee status of the 1 train forced a fly away to brunch. Never would have made it... Next time.

Great to see all of you today. While it was unfortunate that we had to shut it down early, it was a great demonstration of our collective knowledge coming together to help others less experienced.

A couple of our members have offered up their AMA fields for our use from time to time and I would like to take them up on it in the short term. Long term, I'd like to find a site or sites that we have permission either from land-owners or appropriate governing bodies.

In the meantime, it might not be a bad idea to get your AMA membership - its cheap at 58.00/yr. At lunch we talked about Floyd Bennett Field and some other sites. If anyone has ideas or suggestions lets hear them. See you all soon!

can someone please explain why there was shutdown. that is good to know for future reference for people who were not able to attend.

      March 23, 2014

Except for a few designated places, model aircraft is banned from all NYC parks.

      2 · March 24, 2014

We are not allowed to fly in public parks that's why some of us belong to ama clubs that are insured and sanctioned for model aircraft flight as the weather get nicer the choices if field slim down let me know I have two clubs AMA sanctioned in Brooklyn and in rockland ny nice fields but organized

Lot of fun until The Man shut us down (hence 4 stars). Fortunately that wasn't until after we were able to get in some good flying time. No incidents, accidents or fly-aways.

    March 23, 2014

why did man shut you down? that stinks. had to work so couldn't make it.

We will all be meeting across from Gleeson's Pub. They were very welcoming to us last time, lets give them some business afterwards for a beer and lunch.

Be sure to look in the 'more' section for our newly posted guidelines. Please be clear about your intentions especially in regard to landing areas and call out when you are launching/landing your vehicle. If you're flying fpv, please be sure you have someone with eyes on the aircraft to spot for you all the way through your flight.

    See you all tomorrow!

My 11 yr old is a household drone flyer with various indoor toys. He has now purchased a Phantom and is having difficulty getting it to work. Is this a good event for him to come to and get some help?

      March 23, 2014

    • Fred M.

Possibly. Without knowing the issue it's hard to say, but there should be people who can help hey it up on the air (again, depending on the issue)

Van Cortlandt Park is HUGE! Where exactly in the part will the Fly-in take place? Directions to the field from the West 242 St. entrance would be very useful.

Just joined this group. I'm a video/installation/whatever artist <see http://marktribe.net>;, and want to use a drone to shoot a landscape video for an upcoming exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. this summer. Thing is, I don't have a drone, have never flown one, and don't have much time. I also can't make it to Van Cortlandt Park this weekend, unfortunately. In short, I could really use some help, and thought I'd start here.

Since Charles mentioned the approaching spring and summer, just want to make a note about Van Cortland park. Soon enough it will be crowded everyday with all types of teams from cricket to baseball. Used to be that you could fly weekdays AM but I've heard the rangers have been asking people to leave.

    1 · March 18, 2014

    • Fred M.

Like the Polo thing in VA last weekend with DCDUG, we may be able to establish a relationship with a team or two. Maybe put together a nice sports montage.

AS we discussed Press is drawn to BAD NEWS not listen to Diane Feinstien of CA on 60 mins she knows less than nothing about Drones but what to regulate them crash a few and guess how many other office seekers will be on that train. My two sense DONT FLY IN NYC ON SIDEWALKS on In crowded places I fly in Central park on lawns that are closed " No people can go on them so no real problems
That changes in the summer so be careful.

    March 18, 2014

    • Fred M.

About Feinstien. Watching the extra bit online , I didn't get the feeling she really cares all that much about the average person flying a drone. Her answers about certification are pretty much par for the course for any politico. She seemed to be more concerned about the ones that can follow you from 20 thousand feet up.

      March 18, 2014

  • Charles W.

    Fred,

Taking off on a sidewalk or congested area is NOT a good idea its only a matter of time till something goes wrong " OLEGS FLY AWAY (sorry Oleg). I know we are all excellent pilots and have great equipment but these are not PROFESSIONAL units they are Hobby quality no mater how much you pay for them. 50ft is a safe distance in NYC you need to find parks or uncrowded area hard but safety requires it. If my QAV540 fell out of sky oh I lost a t Motor last week at 3 feet ask Ahmed and hit some one with the other three it would be a disaster and a legal problem for me. That is why we fly at AMA Clubs and in remote areas so if this unfortunate malfunction happens we can live to fly another day and we Fly 700 goblins like I had at the FLYIN so it not just airplanes at AMA fields the FPV actually uses more space not less.

    March 18, 2014

    • Fred M.

Your preaching to the choir. I never said to take off in a congested area. However, I realize that in NYC, 50 feet is too restrictive. Look at the 60 minutes segment. I wouldn't say ban the people who made the shots of the treetops and imes square. Look at Colin! There are people right behind them gawking which I'm sure if you flown in CP has happened. That is the reality and we should realize it and make adjustments for it.

      March 18, 2014

  • Fred M.

Just read the SOP Steve emailed us about. The only thing I have questions about is the 50 foot rule. It's a good rule, but being in NYC it's just not the reality that you have that kind of space. Taking off from sidewalks and parks is just going to happen and people will walk right up to your UAV when your trying to set up and take off. The AMA are good guidelines but they are an organization used to flying model planes in large open fields and airfields. Flying in the city I'm sure never occurred to them since you just can't take off from 42nd street. I'm not saying that we should, but we can. I think our SOP should reflect that. The 50 foot rule would make it virtually impossible to take off and film pretty much anything in the city and I'm sure put many of us (yup, me included) in jeopardy of expulsion if it were to be strictly enforced.

Hey guys. Just wanted to say "HI" to everyone and hats off to Brain for your his brave capture of this horrible event. I hope the media sees this as a positive way to capture and report instead of using full sized aircrafts.

The FAA is appealing Trappy, so I daresay they will not move to rush the process. Even if they did, there is no way they would move to make that kind of flying legal by an ordinary citizen. If nothing else convinces you then remember CYA. If you don't know it then Google it. Ask yourself if you have the resources to deal with the situation if it all goes wrong. If my toy goes down in the water I'm out like what 1,500 - 2K? If Bry (can I call you Bry?) Came down and hit a cop/firefighter/ems/pedestrian, how much do you think that would have cost him? That though makes me pucker.

Did you see this? on Fox NY today - Brian nice job on educating people about drones and doing a safe demonstration. http://www.myfoxny.co...

I wanted to make everyone aware of a flying opportunity coming up this weekend. There are caveats though. First you will need a car (sorry pub transit people), second, you need the car because it's this Saturday in VA.

The DC Drone Users Group are organizing an event to film a Polo game. I intend to go and represent NYC but at this point I'm not 100% sure if I'll make it. If I do go I'll be leaving after I help out with the kids bedtime and sleeping in my car. Here is a link to what they have done in the past: http://player.vimeo.com/video/87035856?autoplay=1

If you are interested and want to go or would just like another UAV group to join then sign up with the DC Area Drone Users Group (if you haven't already) and maybe I will see you there.

My first time with this group. So is there plan? Do we just fly around park? Is there spot in park we meet? Looking forward to it.

    March 12, 2014

    • Fred M.

Last time we met up at Gleeson's sports bar (http://www.yelp.com/b...) and yes, we pretty much fly around the park. It's a huge parade ground that is pretty much empty this time of year. It will be interesting to see how the fly-ins go as the weather gets nicer and more people come out. Even so, I don't envision any problems. As it gets warmer we could probably work with the local sports teams to get aerial footage of basen

...baseball and soccer games (hit enter by mistake before.

      March 13, 2014

  • Fred M.

Hello everyone. Sorry to harp on this but I am noticing a lot of news coverage of the flyover yesterday. So far it's not good and it's not bad but I did come across this article and thought we should keep this in mind when we see something interesting to film: http://www.digitaltrends.com/cool-tech/man-uses-drone-get-aerial-view-fatal-car-crash-faa-investigates/#!zxzVf

Most likely nothing will come of this but we should all be aware of what we are inviting at this point in 'Drone' history.

Just saw on CNN that Don Lemon reported seeing a drone over the scene of the building explosions on 116th street. He was saying that he thought it was an 'official' drone possibly belonging to the NYPD. It was definitely a quad.
