flying robots demo day

Thanks to everyone who showed up for the first meetup and made it quite a success! It was great to meet all the people out there who are interested in flying robots.

For our next meetup we're actually going to go out to Marine Park and fly some robots around. I scheduled it a reasonable distance out in the future so that those of us who haven't started experimenting with flying robots yet have some time to build a robot before demo day.

Demo day will be pretty basic, everyone can bring their flying robots and fly them around. We'll compare notes to see what works, what doesn't, share stories, commiserate over our difficulties, and cheer our successes.

Although it's not open source, if you don't have a chance to put together your own open source flying robot before the meetup, feel free to bring an AR.Drone. (http://ardrone.parrot.com/parrot-ar-drone/usa/)

This will be the precursor to a flying robot competition we'll organize for sometime in the fall.

If you need some help getting started with your open source flying robot, here are some links that could help you out:

Thanks everyone for showing up at the meetup! Special thanks of course to the friendly RCSMP people who warmly welcomed us to their field and everyone who brought robots.

I have uploaded my pictures to the meetup group, please upload yours. Videos unfortunately can't be uploaded to meetup but upload to vimeo/youtube and post a link. Here's mine

You don't need AMA membership to watch. It is just for those who fly.

Can I go and watch your drones flying if I don't have an AMA membership?

I swung by the Marine Park field on Saturday and met the RCSMP people. They're a good crew and are very happy to have us do the demo day at the field. So it's on. I updated the meetup location with the specific coordinates of the field. If you're going to be driving PM me beforehand to get my # and call me when you get to the field so I can have an RCSMP member open the gate to let you in.

I'd show up if it weren't for the AMA membership requirement. AMA is only beneficial for those that only fly at sanctioned fields, and I have never flown at one.

Oh Crap, I haven't renewed my AMA membership for this year... If i'm just going to salivate while you guys fly... I'd rather not come. :(

    Enjoy!

Hey everyone. I've gotten in touch with the guys at Marine Park and will be going out to meet them all this Saturday at 11. Let me know if anyone wants to come with. Also they tell me that everyone who wants to fly their robots will need an AMA membership to be covered insurance-wise. I'll post a link to the main event description.

oh i didnt see that you guys needed to ask permission to be able to fly these things... I might be able to help you guys ask about the big open courts across the street from me. It's owned by seward park high school i believe. i think if its educational related, they might be up for it.

Thanks for the Marine Park suggestion Chris, I'll drop them a line as well.

That is true, forgot about the guys there and you will have less success getting permission there because the guys are too up tight about their airplanes. I think you would have better luck with the guys that have a club and a spot within Marine Park

Hi Chris. Floyd Bennett field is high on my list of potential places, I just want to get in touch with the RC flying club that flies there before confirming that as where we will do this.

Looking forward to meet people from the NY area that are into multi rotors and drones. Ill bring my multi rotor to show. Since there is no location, maybe we can meet at a park or field. Maybe brooklyn would be convenient to everyone? Floyd Bennett field?

I suppose anything that can do any autonomous move would consider a robot.

everything mechanical is in essence a robot. is airplane not allowed?
