Improv Games in Central Park

Let's get together again in Central Park and play some improv games! There's no prior improv experience required, and if you prefer to just watch, you're welcome to join as well!

Starting the fun a little earlier this time (6:00pm), so that we get more daylight :). I'll bring my box of warm ups and games again, but please feel free to bring ideas on your favorite games as well! A huge thanks to those of you who have already e-mailed me some new games - please keep them coming :).

Where is Crime Busters Rock?

Crime Busters Rock is in the southern part of the park, just east of Center Drive. Here are the exact directions with Columbus Circle (the southwestern corner of the park) as the starting point:

  1. Walk northeast along Central Park Drive towards West Drive.
  2. Turn right onto West Drive.
  3. West Drive turns into Center Drive, if you bear left (north).
  4. Crime Busters Rock will be to the right (east) of Center Drive (between Wollman Rink and Center Drive, but much closer to Central Drive than the rink).

If you arrive on time, you'll see me there with a yellow sign that says "Improv in the Park." If you're late, look for one or more circles of people having a blast doing improv in the surrounding lawn area :).

Here's a link to a Google map with the route outlined: http://goo.gl/maps/XhvsK

I had a tough time finding criminal rock. I met interesting people along the way as I asked, "have you any idea where criminal rock is?" Criminal Rock !?! It didn't sit too well with many peps - well after almost getting arrested I decided instead to ask, "is this the Improv Group?" The tables turned and now some peps wanted to help me in the search of the Improv Group? The outcome wasn't good. As I headed out of the park I run into Tina of 30 Rock. I'm now wondering if this is good comma... As I walk even faster out of the park, jumping water puddles, I noticed a strange group in the distance on a rock, as they rolled on the ground, some flying around like birds and others standing still like trees. At this point I notice I'm standing in a water puddle. I thought to myself "that has to be criminal rock. I was finally able to find the Improv group at the right rock... I stood back with wet feet, as an Improv spectator, and enjoyed an interesting talented group.

The pleasure was all mine. I also loved the fact that the entertainment was so affordable. If it's okay with the Group I would volunteer my services to photograph and have the pics posted on NYC Improv - Meetup... Many great interesting faces and action shots. Hey, you never know when a few of you might someday look back and say " Performing Improv is nowhere near as hard as trying to find that ROCK in Central Park where it all started.

    Hey Deena,
It was great seeing you yesterday and joining the group again for another cool improv meetup. I have one suggestion though, maybe we can make the break up the big group to little smaller groups of 4 people and then rotate after each improv game. That way everyone gets to act and not just stand around, also it would be a great way to meet people in the group? Just a suggestion. -Aprille

Hi Aprille - great suggestion! I think it will work really well for some of the improv games. For others, it's helpful to have a larger group and an "audience." I think the larger group also works well when a series of shorter games are played in sequence, such that everyone gets to go once and then the group moves on to the next game. Let's definitely experiment with this at the next event to strike the right balance and ensure we play some games in smaller groups!

The problem is, someone called it crimebusters rock as a joke on google maps and if you use any other application, you're probably not going to see it.

Priya - if you don't have the Google Maps app on your phone, just go to the Google Maps website and you'll be able to find it that way. You can also print out the map I posted in the invitation and use the paper version (please see link towards the end of the invitation text). Thanks.

The rock is not too far North of a column inscribed with many other places except "The Rock!"It was close to a hot dog seller who had never heard of it either! Consider the location might be an improve game!
Anyway I was able to find it but wasunable to attend this time!

Kinda very lost can anyone help?

    July 9, 2013

    • Deena

Hi Amy - my sincere apologies - I didn't see this until now. I included written directions and a link to a map in the invitation with a walking path outlined. Please send me a message, and I'd be more than happy to help with additional tips on how to find the rock. It's easiest if you're starting out at Columbus Circle.

Pfff...I couldn't get out of work on time...Looking forward for the next one. Any chance we can make it a little later next time so that I can leave work?

    July 9, 2013

    • Deena

Hi Niki - feel free to join a little later next time. I scheduled it earlier, so that we'd get more daylight hours, but there's no reason you shouldn't still come by whenever you can! We can always bring you up to speed on the game in progress :).
