Iris Ornig Jazz Jam at the Kitano Hotel - ENCORE!

Special Note from David: Our visit to the Kitano Hotel Lounge in September for the Jazz Jam was ENRAPTURING and one of the Highest Points of My Life As A Music Fan! More than twenty extremely talented jazz musicians took turns playing, and the spontaneous result was utterly virtuosic! I was dumbfounded and in awe to hear and see musician after musician come to the stage and each play so brilliantly with no prepaparation. I was not aware that anywhere in New York there were any music jams with this caliber of musicianship. And, amazingly, it was all free. Incredible! ON TOP OF ALL THAT: The host and emcee of that evening, the renowned bassist Iris Ornig, has now become an Assistant Organizer of our Live Music Meetup! Come hear and meet Iris tonight and experience a jam like none you've heard before -- you will be amazed at their extreme talent and spontaneously wondrous performance!
The Kitano Hotel Lounge is one of the premier jazz venues in New York. Host to hundreds of top jazz musicians from the US and worldwide, their Friday and Saturday night shows have a $25 cover charge (and a $15 food/drink minimum). But on Monday nights the Kitano hosts their highly-regarded jazz jam and their $25 cover charge is WAIVED! (And there is only a one-drink minimum -- which can be a soda if you wish.) On Monday, Nov. 15th we will be attending the Kitano Hotel's Jazz Jam led by renowned jazz bassist Iris Ornig, featuring the Kitano Hotel House Band and MANY special guest musicians and singers. Over TWENTY extremely talented musicians will take turns performing, mostly in spontaneously-formed groups of four to seven players. For those who have not attended a jam before: a jam is an improvisational music session that is often used to develop new material and arrangements, and as a communal practice session. For example, in the 1940s and 50s, jam sessions at Minton's Playhouse in New York City were a fertile meeting place and proving ground for younger jazz musicians who would soon become leading exponents of the bebop movement, including Thelonious Monk (Minton's house pianist), Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie.

About The Venue: The Kitano Hotel is an elegant Japanese luxury hotel. Stunningly beautiful, it has an upscale Jazz Lounge which is an extension of its overall elegance. Normally you could not see jazz for free in a venue so beautiful and renowned. I think the hotel must subsidize the lounge as an amenity for its guests. But you don't have to be a hotel guest to see great jazz in this beautiful lounge, it is open to the public as well. Jazz jams are free on Monday nights, and there is only a one-drink minimum, which can be a soda. (On other nights the drink minimum is $15.)
Our Live Music Meetup will be meeting in the Kitano Hotel Lounge at 7:30pm for the 8:00pm performance of renowned jazz bassist Iris Ornig with the Kitano Hotel House Band, plus a large line-up of virtuosically talented guest musicians.

Everyone of the performers was good. I especially liked the harmonica player and the older lady's singing.

I though this event was one of the best music events Ive been to. This represented an entirely different and wonderful side of the live music meetup group. The talent level was through the roof too. Iris is a charming and delightful host. She makes time and room for everyone that wants to play and it makes for a warm environment.

Wow! So many fantastic jazz musicians playing spontaneously -- over twenty musicians played tonight in groups of three to six. This was all organized by the virtuoso bassist Iris Ornig, who is a great host and a magnificent bass player. It was wonderful to welcome so many nice new people to our group -- so fun to speak with all of you! It was also great to hang out with all of our wonderful regular members. Thanks very much to you all for turning out tonight and making this evening so fun and successful!

Iris Ornig is a great organizer and I really enjoyed sitting in on the tenor sax and piano. She was able to keep it moving and invite everyone who wanted to perform to come to the stage. The quality of musicians were excellent and I had a great time.
