Re: [NYCPugMeetupGroup] Potty training

I have raised to 8 yr old pugs. I think when they get bored, they start chewing on the pads, or playing with them. Nothing works better than putting them in a schedule, walking them outside, and giving them a treat after they go outside. My kids no longer use the pads to pee or poop.

I can share my experience with how I switched my dog from wee pads to a better method. My Pekingese was originally trained on wee pads but started to use all absorbent surfaces (think rugs, towels, paper bags) as wee wee pads around 5 months of age. I switched her to the portable potty with fake grass, which she took to right away. Here is the link of the exact product http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001G9YC6C

After a few months, the smell and frequent need to wash the grass became a hassle, so I switched her to a kitty litter which has been working really well for us. I used the pan from the portable potty, lined it with a wee-wee pad (this step optional) and then filled the pan/tray with crystal kitty litter from Petco. I left the potty in the same spot and she took to it right away. This has been the most odorless and least messy method for us and we have been doing this for months. I do sweep around the potty once a day since she's long haired, some (but minimal) litter does escape. However the we always make sure to buy the crystal litter, not the clumping kind) so that there is no litter dust problem.

If anyone has additional questions, feel free to let me know. Remember there are alternatives to wee pads which could work for you as we'll :)

Good luck!

Hi everyone. I have a general question. My pug puppy was doing great with his wee wee pad training. I work so I made a playpen with a crate and wee wee pad. Recently he began violently chewing and eating and tearing the pads. I am not sure why. I did buy a new type of pad this time. They're scented and the old ones were not scented. Does that have anything to do with it? Is he just being naughty? Should I take the pads away all together and just crate him while I am at work (usually 5-6 hours).

Thank you
Kate
