Testing REST APIs for fun and profit

Robert Schultheis is currently a test engineer at Knewton, and has tested a variety software stacks over his 12 years experience in the software world.

This talk is about advocating for Rest APIs from the perspective of testability.  Rest APIs can be a great way to support and augment Selenium tests, as well a very effective way to test without Selenium.  To get the most value out of Rest APIs, there are important technical, and cultural considerations that should be addressed.

Robert has used experience working with Rest APIs to create a new open source library that, in combination with RSpec, makes for test suites that optimize for expressiveness and accessibility.  Part of the talk will introduce this new library, and part of the talk will center on organizational culture around tests and how to derive the greatest value out of your test suites.

Note: food & drinks will be served, the talk will start at 7 PM.

Sorry, the presentation was a mix of a 'prezi' and live demo's off the cmd line. Its not online. It would be cool to work out a screencast of some sort for this kind of presentation, but we just didnt do that this time around.

Advanced REST Client Chrome extension is a simple-yet-powerful tool for exploratory API testing. Kind of blew my mind first time I tried it :) https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/advanced-rest-client/hgmloofddffdnphfgcellkdfbfbjeloo?hl=en-US

http://www.mocky.io/ is also a good way to perform a certain degree of integration testing. I found this very helpful simulating how an app (web or mobile) responds to certain conditions.
